Topic: my bit torrent won't work with zone alarm (and outpost blows)

just did a reformat so I'm having to install all my programs again.  I used zone alarm before with no issues.  got the free one again and even though I tell it to allow bit torrent to acess the internet and to act as a server it will not work.  shuts BT down completely.  any ideas??  hopefully I have the old exe and can install the old version.

The Zone Labs firewall products Zone Alarm 5.0, Zone Alarm Pro 5.0, and Zone Alarm Security Suite 5.0 are not compatible with Azureus due to an issue with their TCP filter, TrueVector (vsmon.exe) Usual symptoms of this issue include but are not limited to 100% CPU usage, slow transfer speeds, corrupted files, trouble establishing incoming and outgoing transfers, complete network outages, complete system freezes, random reboots, and blue screens of death.

Disabling Zone Alarm's firewall protection will not solve the problem as its filter will still be running in the background. A complete uninstallation is required. This issue is not limited to Azureus, and has been confirmed by users of many other filesharing clients including BitTornado, ABC, Shad0w's Experimental, EMule/Gnutella, and Shareaza.

After reading a few online reviews, I learnt that Outpost Firewall by Agnitum does not suffer the above problem. So I uninstalled ZoneAlarm (it puts up a fight though, had to restart into safe mode) and put in the free version of Outpost.

It's a very nice piece of software, very intuitive. ZoneAlarm is good for newbie, if you know what you're doing this is a much more powerful personal firewall. (And I don't even need the pro features , so it's free all the way.)

As I'm writing this Azureus is happily downloading at 50kB/s, give and take.

thanks.  I'll give the other one a shot.  I use BitTornado and with the old zone alarm it worked just fine.

I used to run BitTornado and it wouldn't ever set up the virtual firewall exception so I switched to Azureus as well and it has been working wonderfully

I'm starting to think outpost blows ass.  so it works great sometimes and sometimes it sucks ass.  for no reason at all while browsing it will decide to not allow sites that should be allowed.  ie google,yahoo, some message boards.  what's strange is some of my tabs will work while others don't.  I know it's outpost b/c if I shut ti down the sites work.  if this is a issue with outpost and  firefox I sure as hell am not going back to IE.  found this on the site but it hasn't helped.

Please try to browse the site. Then open Log Viewer and go to Blocked Connections. Using the Reason column find out what is blocked and why. If you do not see the Reason column, right-click the column name in the right pane, select Reason and click OK.

Modify the appropriate rule. If you have any problems concerning creating the rules or finding what is blocked, please follow the instructions:

   1. Download the Debug plug-in from
   2. http://www.agnitum.com/download/support/OutpostDebugInstall.exe, install it and reboot your PC. Reproduce your problem.
   3. Immediately after the problem is reproduced, right-click the Outpost system tray icon and select Save & archive logs.
   4. Right-click the Outpost system tray icon and select Explore logs folder.
   5. Send us the logs.zip file.
   6. Send us your current Outpost configuration files (for example, configuration1.cfg and configuration1.ini files located in the Outpost installation folder).
