Is This Too Close?
« on: July 07, 2005, 10:56:57 PM »
I still can't believe it, but I got a couple seats dead center in Section A Row A.
Is this going to put me too close for a good recording?

no such thing as too close.....

and you can always trade back to the sweetspot, and surprise someone in the process by giving up "better seats".
That crossed my mind, Moke . . .  for about one second.  No way I'm giving up these seats.  ;D

DANG !!!!!!!!!!  As much as I'd love to sit in the front row for this show, I'd rather get a good recording.  (I can't believe I just said that -- it's a disease, I tell you, this taping game.)  Whoever I approach to trade seats is going to think I'm absolutely nuts.  This most definitely will be a stealth job so I won't be able to explain to them why I want to trade.  What am I supposed to tell them . . . . that I'm REALLY far-sighted??

I have taped a few shows from either front row, DFC, or close to it, and it is tough, but you can definitely stealth it and do a good job.  Last one of those types I did was for Billy Idol a couple of months ago.  There were no chairs in front of us, and we were maybe 10 feet from stage.  I did something similar with Tracy Chapman, front row, DFC.  Security there even nabbed the fool next to me and my wife for taking pics with a disposable camera. :P  I got away squeaky clean.  DO IT!

You would be suprised how hard it is to trade seats with someone. People look at you like you are running some kind of scam or something. The times I tried to exchange seats it usually takes me 2-3 couples before they take me up on the offer. One thing to say is that the seats are to close and that level of sound is to much for your ears to take.

Use Omni caps.  Not sure if Schoeps makes subcards.  Those would be just as good as omnis.  Just my 2 cents.

wait until you get inside the venue, then find the seats you want. you can choose where you want to be this way, and you can tell tha tradee, if your ticket dosen't work tou know where i will be.

I taped in about 4th row the other day at an 800 or so person club and it was too close.  Got all stage sound and low vox.

How about this:  Do a stack tape.  Ask the people on the end of the aisle to switch with you.  You're still front row and you grab the stack.

what band? security are complete dicks there. If there's a section, you better be there, or have very lo pro gear and a hat if you want to run up front. particularly in the first row.

but aside from that, your seats are probably still 15-20 from stage. if you run ortf to catch the stacks, and can still pick up some stage mix, should be pretty nice, albeit a little strong in the low end.

My 2 cents: just point your mics backwards. 8)

Band:  Gipsy Kings

Insofar as security goes, I've taped there a few times -- with a hat.  Definitely not a taper-friendly venue.  I'd prefer not to be in the front row for that reason, but I don't doubt I could pull it off.  (I just don't fit the taper profile. ;) )  My concern is not really the security, it's being too close to catch the sound.

And dang-nab-it, "Dumb Ass Filter" . . .  who the hell are you?   :)  I'm getting better at catching on to the frequent name changes, but not this time.

Your 2 cents' worth speaks volumes.  ;D

I've pretty much decided I'm going to keep my eye on eBay and Craig's List for some better (taping) seats, then sell mine.  This way I won't bring attention to myself trying to get people to trade me seats.  As much as I'd love to sit in the first row of this venue, I'd rather have a good recording of the show.
