Topic: External Firewire HD Enclosure Recs?

Thinking of putting together my own external, has anyone gotten one with firewire capability that has performed admirably for them before I just pick a random one?

whatever you get, before you start copying mission critical data to the device, make sure you've got the latest firmware update for your enclosure's chipset.

i can't recall the name of the chipset i've got at home, but before i read up on some known issues, i lost a lot of (replaceable) data -- twice.  don't be like me!  :-)

I use 2 Bytecc ME-320-BK that I got from Newegg with no problems. They run firewire into a PCMCIA card but I could do USB instead. I guess my only complaint would be that they are a little noisy.

If you are concerned about the Db level of your enclosure, before you put a drive in it go out and invest in a better fan.  A decent small fan is relatively inexpensive and would probably blow away the stock ones in a $50 enclosure.  (pun intended)

I absolutely love the Venus DS3 I got from Newegg. I have two of them. They are drawer-type enclosures - FW/USB2. They have a fan under the drive as well. I like them because I can take it to anyone's place and be able to plug in to whatever machine they have.

anyone know if they have any firewire devices similar to the on the go usb drives that you can push a button and the firewire device copies all the data off of it?  Been looking but havent found anything yet

The Maxtor One Touch Series will do just that.  We bought two 300 gig ones right before I left for spain for the TV studio and apparently they work with the G5 mac like a pro.
