OK then, i'll give ya reason!

Naks will provide you with the card and omni patterns, standard.  You've already got a pair of shotguns, so the hypers in your 933's are rather redundant.  Should you want to stealth you can always franken-mod them.  Sure they are a little large to shove down your pants, but the ladies will think you're extra endowed, and how can that be a bad thing <note to self, stealth lsd2...> anyways.  You'll get the classic NAK sound that made so many great dead tapes, plus they hold their value consistantly and collectors always seek them.

and thats a great price if your lookin at the ones in the YS, usually their $100 more.

the 933s are run on 9v right?
if they are 9v like the stock 300s, i would go 300s anyway, though they wil be very close sonically.
i think the 933s can be modded to p48 like the 300s, so its a toss up.

there is a bunch of talk in the leegeddy franken-nak mod threads about at853rx (p48 powered) mics versus the modded naks.  they sound very close sonically.

i really dont think there is much of a difference between the two no matter how they are powered, both sound better w/ p48 thats for sure, i guess if you are going to ever stealth tape, id go for the 933s.  if strictly open taping go for the naks & have busman2 or marc mod them for phantom.

if i did get them i would have busman2 or marc franken-nak them up for stealth outings

and i would like to get some card and omnis (really want to run a j-disc) and cut free of the hypers (i got shotguns i dont need them that bad)

T+

Thanks

after looking at our sig i realize they are battery powered (933s) do they have interchangable caps?

yes, they have interchangable caps but i dont have any

i think some how you can put the AT853 cap on them and you can mod them for p48

maybe i should just mod them and get more caps?

i dont know, i still have some thinking to do

"caps for the at853rx mics can be had for $28/piece, but the omnis are discontinued, fwiw.  you said your 933s may take those caps, but who knows, post to team At a boys for the answer to that one."

The place with the $28 caps did have white omnis in stock for a while. They may all be gone now.  Also, keep in mind that the new line of AT mics that are replacing the unipoint series (AT853, etc.) have caps that will work with the older series mics (AT853, etc.)  Don't know if those caps are on the market yet, or how much they will cost.  Doubtful that they will be found for $28, since they are 'new' on the market.

I ordered some white omni caps for my 853's last week from Alpha (west).  I think they shipped directly from Audio Technica.  Gonzalo was the person who's been helping me at Alpha, might want to ask for him if/when you call.  I also asked him about the new capsules for the old 853's.  He didn't have the prices handy but said they'll be considerably higher than $28.

Naks were my very first mics so I have a soft spot on my heart for them, and while I don't think you can really go wrong w/ either of these mics IMO the AT's have more capsule options & won't break the bank if you feel like expirementing on some new caps.

to my ears, naks tend to have a warmer/more rounded sound than the audio technica.
