Topic: Hardware recommendation for 24/96 A>D

I want to convert some cassettes and hi-fi VHS (audio only) at 24/96.  What should I buy?

M-audio Audiophile USB
M-audio Audiophile Firewire
Edirol UA-5
Microtrack

I'm trying to avoid an internal soundcard.

I'd go with one of the first 2 listed. They have been used extensively for bit perfect transfers via spdif. Edirol will resample on the digi inputs should you ever need to transfer via spdif. Microtrack would work as well, but considering you need CF media the price will be significantly more than the USB or firewire alternative.

Thanks for the advice.  I wonder if there is any benefit to the firewire or USB version of the outboard Audiophile.  I have both Firewire and USB connects.

If you have FireWire, I'd use that first. While the theoretical speeds on USB2 are better, I have found FireWire to always be faster. Not sure if this is overhead in the USB drivers or what, but with a faster port/bus, you won't have any issues with importing audio or recording audio at 24/96. You might have buffering issues if the port/bus can't keep up.
