Henry Engineering Patchbox for SBD on JB3
« on: November 14, 2005, 09:56:52 PM »
http://www.henryeng.com/patchbox.html

is this a sure shot way to get a SBD by going...

SBD>Henry Engineering Patchbox>Nomad JB3??

my question is...is the purpose of the henry engineering patchbox to eliminate all the adapters for getting a SBD hooked up to your recorder?

by that i mean, if the board engineer hands you any type of out, it doesnt matter b/c the patchbox is the "adapter" so you plug what they give you into patchbox, then run 1/8" RCA from patchbox to your recorder...

so you have out they give you, patchbox, rca 1/8", recorder?

as i re-read this i think i am on crack, but does anyone know what i mean and could help me, basically i want this patchbox if it is a "universal adapter" which i think that is the purpose of it, but am not sure.

That's not what it is. It takes one input signal (balanced 1/4" TRS) and outputs multiple outputs. If you're not getting balanced 1/4" TRS out of the SBD it's not doing you any good. It's designed to send a mixer signal to a bunch of different devices, not take a variety of devices/connectors and feed a single device.

The way I think I understand your question is:

"Can I use the patchbox as an alternative for having a 1/4", RCA, and XLR Cable for patches into the SBD?"

The answer is Yes and No, the patchbox has two 1/4" in's that patch into the SBD, then the box has RCA, 1/4" and XLR outs for whomever is patching.  So you'd still need to carry with you one of those cables on top of the patchbox.  Also using the patchbox assumes someone has a spare pair of XLR outs to give you.

Save the $$ and just buy 3 sets of cables, it comes in handy.  The patchbox is just an unecessary step.

SanJay,

So what is the benefit of having the patchbox?  So I would still have to have which cable/cables to run the patchbox?

Also, do i have to make the 3 cables myself if i save the money, or can i just get them assembled at radio shack?

thanks!

The advantage to having a patchbox is that if you are the band or someone who needs to split their signal into multiple sources it allows you to do so.  So you would still need to have a pair of dual 1/4" plugs that terminate in xlr's, RCA's and another in 1/4" in addition to one other pair to go from the patchbox to the JB3, so really by having a patchbox you are not  eliminating one set of cables but instead require at least 4.  There is absolutly no benefit in having a patchbox unless you are running 4 jb3's or something crazy.

You would be better served in  buying the cables (you can get the RCA > Miniplug and *maybe* the 1/4" to miniplug at Radio Shack, you can make the XLR's yourself if you feel up to it, or there are members on this board who will make them.  Also Kindkables.com makes wonderful cables.

Try PMing

Todd R

he makes nice cables, to start you off normal star quad cables should be fine, you won't need silver ones.
Also you could post an ISO in the yard sale.

If you are going to always be taping at the same club, find out what spare "out" they have in their board and you'll only need 1 set of patch cables, if not You will need:

double XLR > 1/8" stereo miniplug
double RCA > 1/8" stereo miniplug
double 1/4" mono > 1/8" stereo miniplug

Good luck to you

I believe that anyone can make cables.  You should try it.  The parts are so cheap, and you can always just redo it if you mess up.  It is way worth it.
