Topic: Can you be too close taping in an arena?

I usually go for tickets that are DFC about half way between the sound desk and the stage.  However, buying tickets this morning I could only get a DFC single to come up in rows 1 and 2 before the floor sold out.  I went for row 2.  I already know I'm going to stick out as I am right in the middle of two catwalks looking forward, but are there any other concerns I should have?

yes, sometimes.

its usually pretty easy to find someone in the sweet spot to trade tickets for the 1st or 2nd row.

I had row 2 seats for the ABB in atlanta one year. The tapes sound good, but unbalanced. You'll probly have a shit load of guitar and drums, bass and vocals will probly be distant. It's a matter of where the sound comes from and how far it needs travel to develope a decent sound stage. From extremely close you'll get mix of stage volume and PA, but mostly stage.

depending on the show, alot of shows not have stage PAs pointed out to the audience, you can get some cool imaging from those on stage PAs and the instruments on stage. 

Your comment on the catwalk...remember, if they walk past you, you will look like a tool facing forward with the artist behind you...cna be done, just be ready for it

not saying it couldnt be done, just easier to make it incognito if you plan ahead

Depending on where the subs are, being that close can result in some overpowering low end.  Not muddy typically, just overpowering to the point that it becomes distracting on playback.  Agreed on the fill cabinets that are sometimes placed in front of the crowd...if there is one (many), the image may turn out to be really narrow, and there is often a lack of ambience, but you may pull a screaming soundboard-ish tape.  Good luck.

I personally would trade for a sweet spot ticket.  make some young lady happy and she might return the favor later.
