Topic: Mics suddenly sound "different"

Hi all -

Have recently recorded some stuff with my existing cmc8>reactive pre>jb3 rig.  However, the sound just seems "different" to me. Can't put my finger on it precisely, but teh quality doesn't have the clarity I associate with this setup.  It COULD be that I'm recording in different acoustics, I suppose, but previously that hasn't resulted in what I'm hearing now. I wish I could define it better, but they just don't sound as good as they used to.

How would I check for a problem? Should I send them back to Chris and get him to check them out? They're less than a year old, have been well taken care of etc etc.

Have you checked the jb3 recording setup in the menus to confirm you are recording at the same resolution as previously?  If that has changed for some reason, it could result in an audible difference.  Shot in the dark, good luck it finding the issue.

yeah, i always set it to 44.1 every time I record; it's part of my setup routine. I wish I could define this better - it's kind of like the sound you get when they overload just a little, but the waveform looks fine and doesn't show it peaking.  I know my description is terribly nebulous, but the best I can describe it is that something just Isn't Quite Right.

To answer you both:

- usually I tape in either small, small rooms (ie when I'm at home or when I'm coaching at somebody's home or in a small practice studio) or in a full-size opera theater.  I usually use my iRiver for the smaller spaces, and the JB3 rig in the theater, so I'm more used to hearing this rig recording in BIG spaces.  The two recent outings were in smaller, intimate concert venues.  But really, even with that, I'm surprised that I'm hearing a sort of "fuzzineess" that I haven't heard before.

- on both occasions fresh 9v battery in the reactive pre (which also prpovides juice for the mics)

Is there anything I could be looking for in the waveform or on software meters in wavlab that might point clues?  I don't immediately notice anything different, but then I'm a n00b and may simply not know what to look for...
