« on: December 28, 2005, 02:38:44 PM »
figured this has been discussed before..but could not find it on the search.  But....besides being cool sounding why is an AUD/SDB mix called a "matrix"

Just wondering the lingo.

Thanks.

A matrix is a combination of multiple sources.  It doesn't have to be sbd/aud.  As for the origins, I have no idea.

I bet it has something to do with mathematics, as matrix is a "transformation".

or the suck ass movies....multi camera angles mixed together to produce a nice 360 effect, just apply that to the mics....I believe the matrix film was the first to use that effect.....no idea though, just a guess :)

The most common audio reference for matrix (outside of taping) is the "matrix out' on a console.  This is an output of all channels with all effects and fades except the main fader.  Not sure how the name got applied directly to taping though.  I also agree that a matrix is a blend ouf multiple sources > 2 chan stereo, and I agree it could be any type of source technically.

I do think taping is the reality of the business..it is also an impetus for artists to create studio CDs that are ART, not just another recording...    Fareed Haque  2-4-2005

actually... I saw the original Matrix, in it's entirety, for the first time about a month ago.  I thought it was really good.  I like movies that really make you think "this could be real", even though it obviously... well, most likely isn't.
