iso: stand/clamp advice
« on: January 28, 2006, 05:17:06 PM »
Hey now I was wondering if someone could offer up some suggestions for using a clamp and a stand.
I do not have either and I recently got a mic, no more patching for me  8)

So my setup is:
Sony ECM -MS907 > Sony D8
a modest rig but you gotta start somewhere right?

I am looking to go the clamp route at least at first, I am in NJ and was looking just for something bare bones nothing fancy. I guess if I was to get a stand I would just clamp it on anyway since it is just a one piece mic?

My plan is to use this setup at clubs and bars around the NYC metro area.
Any tips appreciated.

Perhaps that 5/8 screw can be removed to clip the mic on the end?  No idea how that mic looks, is made, or needs to be positioned.  Assuming it is one of those small omnis with the clip.

There is a pic of the exact mic in this thread:

The pic has a clamp with it, I should just cruise by B&H they are in nyc right?

Not sure how your mic would mount, but you can go there and bring the mic with you.  They have most of those clamps out on display.  A lot are not even in packaging so you can really check them out.  Yes, they are close to the tunnel and parking in their lot is free if you buy something (not sure if there is a minimum).

On the same general topic,  what is typically used to secure a mic stand to a balcony rail?
i have Bogan 12' stand and would like to extend it above the audience out ward from the balcony rail.

thanks for any info.

If you plan on extending your stand out over the audience, gaffers tape's the way to go.  Use LOTS of it to ensure stability.  I guarantee if that sucker falls and hits a patron, the venue will not take kindly to tapers for a long while.  Other alternatives include a retail extension bar (or custom extension like the one I got from APIC - check the Archive forums for their contact info) plus a beefy clamp, like the Bogen SuperClamp, specifically designed to hold the weight in question.

i would guess the patrons attorney would have a bit of trouble with me too... i don't suppose a copy of the tape with the big "thump"; that was picked up by the mics when it landed,  edited out would make them forget about the whole thing? :wink2:

Thanks for the info. i'll make sure it's secured properly. The info you gave gives me that opportunity.

use a safety lanyard!

I do the horizontal reach fairly frequently. Boomarm counterweights (canvas sandbags) come in very handy.

A 12' reach?,.... ain't gonna happen!

Thanks  for this info too. I was planing on some type of safety catch as well as the mount.   I have 12' feet but was only planing on trying to use half of that. Believe me the last thing i want is my rig to fall from a balcony.  I hate watching CNN let alone being the lead story. :-[
