external HDD recommendations for archiving my masters
« on: January 13, 2006, 02:38:57 PM »
really thinking about getting a extrernal hdd for all my masters.  I have everything burned on some type of made in japan (ty) but still.....  I asked in another thread about recomendations and someone said to set up a whole box in linux etc.  i don't want or know how to do that.  just an external that I can connect to either of my computers.  the plan is to only hook it up to move masters to it and that is it. I figure with everything burnt and on a harddrive I should be ok for a while.  so what brand/types should I look at??

Harddrives fail.
I would look into a RAID1 firewire enclosure.
Definately do not use a RAID0 enclosure, twich as likely to fail, you'd be better off with a single disk.

if you do go with an external drive, remember that an external drive is nothing more than an internal drive in a firewire or usb (or other interface) case.  vendors will charge a lot more for an "external drive'" than you'd pay if you just bought a standard 3.5 inch drive and put it in a usb2 case

so i'd say just grab a couple hundred gig drive for a good price, and drop it in a firewire or usb2 case (for like 50 bucks)
