Tablet PC--Would this be worth a shot for 24-bit?
« on: January 29, 2006, 12:50:10 PM »
There is an outfit selling a bunch of Fujitsu tablets on Ebay like this for $235 BIN:  http://tinyurl.com/ayy4b

Fujitsu Stylistic 3500S Tablet PC
Intel Celeron ULV 500  Mhz processor
256 MB Ram
Brilliant, 10.4 inch SVGA Active TFT Screen (Great Resolution!) Indoor/outdoor viewable this is a 3500S screen.
Digitizer: Liquid filled, passive, low glare, palm rejection
Stylus pen included (if you want you can also  use your finger!!)
Nice 15 Gig Hard Drive
Battery Holds a Charge!! (charge time is unknown and not guaranteed)
Internal Modem
Brand New 802.11b WIFI wireless card added
etc.

Would this be worth trying to use w/ a UA-5 for a cheap, short-term 24-bit solution?  It comes w/ win 2000 pro.  I'd just run 24/48 w/ it.  Or are tablets just not a good idea for taping?  thanks, Drew

Two things would concern me here:

1. 256k isn't a whole lot of ram and I'm not sure it would be sufficent to do 24-bit
2. It doesn't list a USB or Firewire port, or card slot, so what would the digital interface be?

Yeah, 256 isn't a lot but the 24-bit faq says that 128 is sufficient for a lappy so I would hope 256 in this instance is good enough-- 512 would make me feel better, though, that's for sure.  I'd also get a firewire card for it to help w/ transfers.  I'm thinking it might be worth a shot...  :hmmm:

At that cost for a laptop, you should consider upping the ram to 1gb with the money you've saved.
I'd be most concerned with the Celeron....

The specs on the Fujitsu site says it's 256k max.

Why would the Celeron be of concern?  thanks

and it says that it has one PCMCIA Port, so you should be able to plug in a VX pocket and be good to go for 24/48 recording.

and I wouldn't worry about the RAM or the processor.  if you set it up just for audio, and get rid of all the other junk on it, the processor and the RAM should be sufficient.  running stereo at 24/48 is only about 0.275 MB / second of data.
