need help making live recordings
« on: March 10, 2006, 08:18:54 AM »
i'm looking for input on a simple rig to use for live concert recordings. basically i'd like to have a very portable, simple setup to catch audience recordings of live shows. something like a stereo mic and a little digital recorder with the ability to control basic recording levels etc.

can someone give me some suggestions for a basic setup like this? i've never done anything like this, so i'm pretty clueless about where to even start. i just want to able to catch gigs, rehersals, and quick ideas and be able to work with them as mp3's. i don't really need a multitrack capability at this point.

thanks!
matt

If you can stretch that budget to about $650, you'd be able to have an awesom starter rig of combined used and new equipement... Mostly new except the JB3... JB3s are no longer produced so you would have to buy it second hand... Once in a while you'll find one NIB(new in box) on Ebay or a refurb from Creative but you'd be able to find a good used unit in the yardsale here... They always come and go, just keep your eyes on the board... You may get lucky in the yard sale and be able to pick up a whole starter rig for a decent price...

$295.00  for SP C4 (mics) - new

$180.00  for JB3 (recorder) - used

$35.00  for ArtII Phantom (Phantom battery box) - new

$40.00  for any starter mic stand - new

$8.00  for stereo bar - new

$40.00  for 2 x Xlr cables - new

$45.00  for 2 x line matching transformers(many makes and models) - new

$7.00  for an adapter (2 x 1/4" > stereo mini) - new

I don't know if that helps at all... I hope it does... If you have any other questions or concerns, everyone here is always happy to help... Just make sure that you read through all the forums first and if necessary try the search function for your answer... We've all had the questions when we started and alot of your questions have probably already been answered somewhere on this site already...

Welcome to the world of 2 channel field recording... Be careful, you're about to enter a very addictive hobby... Before you know it, you'll have the upgrade bug...

You could probably find yourself something simpler and cheaper but then you would find yourself upgrading that much sooner...

The rig mentioned above should keep you happy for a little while... I've run that exact rig since last summer and have been happy w/ my pulls... Only now am I looking at upgrading and adding a UA-5 (pre/ADC) to my chain...

Those c4's are great mics at a great price... Just look around on this site, you'll see them fluffed on a regular basis...

sounds like you want something you can wear on your body?

stealth mics > batt box > recorder is as basic and portable as it will get. you should be able to get a nice stealth setup with your budget. toughest thing is gonna be picking out the recorder you want. jb3 is the standard here but can be hard to come by at times and is larger than some people would like for stealthing (size of a discman) but is still totally stealthable. the i-river recorders seem to be getting more and more popular here as well.

thanks guys, you all have been a great help so far!

i'm not really interested in stealth.  simplicity and portability are big pluses though.  it would be great to have a relatively small package that is easy to set up, and just requires someone to push "record" at the start of the show and push "stop" at the end.

i basically want to be able to document our live shows and be able to edit and post clips on the band website.  as far as mics, i'll be able to put the mics in the sound booth at every show, so they will be in a good spot.  i'm not planning on getting obsessed with this stuff, but just want to get a fairly accurate recording of the live "front of house" sound, and have a decent enough quality to post online.
