Question about level setting on my pre and recorder
« on: March 11, 2006, 10:36:42 AM »
I just picked up a DPA4061 >MMA6000 rig...which i totally love and thanks to cool people on the board I got them at a great price.

Now I'm going to run this line in on my MD.  Last night was the first night out with it and I had +10 db on the MMA6000 and had the recorder on 16-17 of 30.  should i have less gain on the pre and higher on the MD or does it not really matter?

I'm going to NIN this week and I was wondering if I have to use the low cut should be on.  I didnt need to have it on with my CSBs or 4060's.

Heres an mp3 from last night...it think it sounds pretty good for being some hole in the wall club downtown.

use the lowest gain range of the mma that will  drive the line input of your recorder to an acceptable level..on the recorder side, the recording level should be at maximum for the best dynamic range and SNR..

if you run gain on the mma, you run a higher chance of brickwalling... I've yet to run my mma on any gain (4060's and high spls don'w need much gain).....  Teddy's advice is correct.

however, if I had 4061s, I'd be tempted to run them on 2 (possibly 4) to send a nice hot signal to the recorder.  Try it on an opening band that you might not care about.   I borrowed mics and a pre from a friend (I had never run it before).  When I was running the pre flat, it wasn't giving me as much volume as I had hoped.   The lowest gain setting was +6... so I turned that on, and it caused a lot of visual peaks... so I backed off the volume on my R1 a little bit (iow, threw in the ingredients for brickwalling) but it sounded very very good... brought the source much "closer" it seemed.
Tickets are dead to me.  Except the ones I have, don't have, and lost.  Not to mention the ones you have, don't have, and lost.   And the ones that other dude has, doesn't have, and lost.  Let me know if you need some tickets, I'm happy to oblige.

well ive taped about 5 shows so far.

Boy Hit Car in a small club...+10 on the MMA and then about 15 of 30 on the line in on the MD and came out good.

NIN in a civic center...+7.5 on the MMA and 21/30 and come out super awesome.

Black Crowes in the Theatre...same settings at NIN and sounds distant...but I wasnt inline with a stack still good.

NIN (again) in an arena L was +2.5 R was +5.0 (I guess that happened when I was sticking it in my shorts)  and 22 on the MD.  Stood about 20 feet back from the stack and sounds EXCELLENT!

Nickelback / Chevelle / Trapt in an arena +0 on the MMA and 25/30 on the MD and still was nice and loud with plenty of headroom for all their stupid ass pyro.

So I guess I dont need any boost for the arenas...but the clubs might need some.

Thanks for all the input guys!
