Help fixing optical/line in on Nomad Jukebox 3
« on: May 03, 2006, 12:30:56 AM »
Uggh, had the unpleasant experience of having someone yank on my mic cable while it was plugged into my jb3.  Afterward the 1/8" mic connector wouldn't slide properly into the jb3 optical/line in input (seems like it's a bit more loose than usual when trying to slide it in) nor would it consistently register a left and a right recording channel at the same time.  Still managed to pull a mono sbd with no probs that night, just had to fiddle with the thing and rest it with some tape against a wall, haha.

I read the jb3 faq about this problem.  Taking mine apart seems easy enough, but the soldering etc etc is a bit above what I'm prepared to do, or can do as I've no soldering gear or soldering knowledge.  Creative doesn't even service the damn thing anymore, it's discontinued.

If anyone knows how to fix this problem or has fixed one before could you kindly contact me and maybe we could figure out some way for me to get my jb3 fixed.

Thanks in advance to anyone that responds.

hmmm... not sure what the FAQ is telling you to do... guessing it may be replacing the jack.

Sometimes jack connectors use a flat spring tension to hold the plug in place... is it possible that the spring is sprung... errr... tweaked... and can be re-tweaked without unsoldering?

thanks, that's always another option.  I didn't think of it like that.  Some day soon I'll have to take it apart and just have a look.

I'm getting weird, random +4dB gains on the right channel, ranging from a split second to several minutes.

Its an intermittent problem, and has been happening since I managed to drop the Nomad a few weeks ago (18" or so).

So far I've only been able to replicate it with the following rig:

AT933 > 3 wire battery box > Nomad JB3 #2

Area round input plug is smoothed off and the pleatherette case isn't fouling it.

I ran two rigs last night, swapping round the Nomads:

AT933 > 3 wire battery box > Nomad JB3 #1
CMC2>SPSPSB1>Nomad JB3 #2

and got two perfect recordings. Odd eh?

Those H120s on ebay are looking tempting..

oops, posted in the wrong spot, my mistake.  Anyways, after finally taking my jb3 apart and checking the workability of the optical/line in I see that some of the connectors to the circuit board are loose.  Looks like I will have to try my hands at soldering, haha.  Wish me luck!

Pockets full of nickels and nothing left to eat, and I'm stuck behind a semi on Soniat Street.

If you get stuck I might be able to source the part and replace it. for a Nominal fee
