Just a note... I have also used the battery box with the led light.  I have experienced shutdowns of the MT with it while the MT has never shut down without it.  While I can't say for certain that the box is the issue I have been able to reproce the shutodows at home with it and never without it.  Also, just a note this box provides 5.6v and not the standard USB 5.0v .

There's additional recently posted food for thought about such external powering devices being used with the MT2496 at:

If I use the box from compactflash, do I just leave the box on when I start taping, even if I have a full charge on the microtrack?  I need to record about 3.5 hours at 16/44, using a 2gb CF and a 1gb CF.  My fear is the battery on the MT dying on me towards the end.  I have the box as a backup, but do I keep it plugged in, but switched off until the charge on the MT starts to die, or what?  I need help asap....I am catching a flight first thing in the morning to record a show tomorrow night!!!

Suggest charging up the MT battery shortly before using it, and then after booting up and starting the recording, plug in your auxiliary battery box that will initially try to do both charge the MT battery to full again, and while doing that, supply power to the deck.

Once the MT battery is back at full, the external pack will run the deck for as long as possible before handing off the deck powering back to the internal battery.  Anyway, that's what should happen in my experience.
