What are people using to test/check their batteries?

On my NIMH batteries, I drain and fully charge them via the charger every now and then.

On my lithiums, I use them a few times (tracking approx time used) and then put them in things like remotes

Thanks

I've seen the R1 stop by itself with new batteries fresh out of the packet.
Both Duracell and Energiser have caused the recorder to stop usually after a few minutes.

I now always use a new set of Duracell batteries for each set and start the recorder at least 10 minutes before the band are ready.
If the R1 is still recording when the band come on then I have some confidence that the batteries will last the whole set.

Either there are a lot of dodgy batteries being shipped as good or the R1 is very sensitive to the way the batteries are inserted into the battery compartment. I think it is the latter as I have tried apparently faulty batteries from the performance when I got home after the show and they recorded for over an hour and a half with no problems.

After testing the unit with :
2 different CF cards, 4gb and 8gb
alkaline, lithium, 2000/2200/2300/2500 nimh batteries

and getting all sorts of different results, all bad

but perfect results with wall-wart power

Roland said I had to send it it, and it will take around 2 weeks to look at, so Ill have to be patient and run the M1 in the short term  :-[

I will keep this thread up to date on this issue... may be I got a bum unit!

I have a R-1 and have had some powering issues.....I don't get out much so most of my "testing" is done at home.....On several occasions the unit just dies and then runs for a while and then shuts down......I used 20 different sets of batteries.......The larger of the AA's (2500mAh) are a bit too large for the battery compartment. So me being the genius that I am decided to "modify " it slightly.....I cut the top coils off of the negative battery connections to increase clearance. But that didn't help. I noticed that the positive connectors were out of place and bent to the point that I could not repair it without disassembling the unit...So at this point it is at Edirol for repairs...I still waiting to hear from them....It's been about a week....I'll give them another week or so and then give them a call.....I'll let you know how it turns out...I'm sure they are going to ask "What idiot was screwing around with this thing ?" at which point I plan on pleading the fifth.

Peace,
JK

Just to update everyone, I called Roland USA today, and they informed me that a replacement unit has shipped to me (will be here on Monday).

I asked for any technical details on the problems or issue, and all I was told was "they probably had to contact Japan, so it was just easier to send out a new one).

So, thanks for the replacement, but sorry the info wont help anyone else having similar issues.

It will get a complete test when it comes in.

PS - bought a used MT as a backup.... dumping the DAP1... no need for 2 CF recorders and 2 DAT decks, M1 as a total backup... or may be I am just a chicken  ;D

What is the external power supply voltage?  Maybe this is the way to go.  Oh yeah, and *solder* a pair of wires right onto the unit, don't use the power jack.

out of curiosity, do you check levels alot using the backlighting???....I only had the r1 crap out one time, when I ended up staying for a 2nd show that I originally wasn't going to do, so I didn't bring an extra set of batteries.....anyway, shortly during the 2nd set, the meter showed low battery power.....kept looking at it, and looking at it and it was still going until I accidentally turned the dial, igniting the backlighting.....as soon as I did that, it powered down and wouldn't come back on......I wonder how much of a drain the backlighting is on the batteries, and if I hadn't used it at all, would I have gotten that complete 2nd show???....anyway, just a thought....

Very very little.... and when testing at home with these kinds of fully charged batteries, I had the same issue:
Alkaline (brand new)
Lithium (brand new)
2000 mAh
2300 mAh
2500 mAh

less than 1 hour of run time (max) before it would die... then put the batteries into another device, and it would work fine.

Roland replaced the unit for me, new one came on Monday, and so far, no issues.  ;D

i've never had any of these problems everyone is mentioning. I can consistantly get about 5.5-6 hours of recording on a set of 2500mah rechargeables. I only keep headphones plugged in when i want to listen to what i'm catching, otherwise i leave them out and just watch the meter. I set the display to the meter when i'm recording and then put on the "hold" switch. when i want to check the levels, i have a very small key chain flashlight to see the display if i'm in a dark setting. although i did find that if you are recording with any of the effects on, you use a lot more battery power than you normally would.  With the EQ effect on, i have gotten about 3.5 hours out of a set of batteries. so far, i love my R1
