Is MS technique possible w/ ua-5?
« on: May 30, 2006, 12:13:05 AM »
SSIA.  have been thinking about getting a MS cap but not if it won't work w/ ua-5
I have been reading a lot on the technique but I guess I cannot conceptually figure out how the two lobes of the figure 8 fit in one channel.

In post...how do you take the info from a single channel MS and then create the M+s and the M-s?  I am most familiar with CEP 2.1 but can use whatever software is easiest.  Any pointers for post mix?  Any good online tutorials?

Thanks in advance

You can do MS with any two channel recorder, you just won't be able to monitor it in a MS mode. You can manually create the true L and R channels in post (use search), or you can use a plugin or some apps have built-in decoding.

As tainted pointed out, with the UA-5 you will have to do the M/S > L/R in post, but that's easy.  I use Cool Edit for my decoding. Go to amplify > channel mixer.  There should be a preset for M/S > L/R. I think it defaults to equal amounts of mid and side in each channel. It's a decent starting place to experiment from.  It is possible to create some wildly different mixes, but I have found if you favor one mic too much over the other, the imaging will start to collapse.  I could send you a disc of raw M/S files if you want to try it out.

One quick question.  Do I understand it correctly that the UA-5 doesn't supply phantom power to inputs 3 & 4.  So to run a third mic into the UA-5 you would have to give it seperate phantom power if it required it?
