Does 722 HD spin while unit is only passing signal?
« on: March 25, 2006, 07:23:48 PM »
I have been leaving my 722 on for extended periods of time (100+ hours straight), using it to burn mic cables in recently.  Is the unit's hard drive spinning while the pre amp is passing signal, but not recording...i.e. am I wearing it out by leaving the unit on 24/7?

Thanks for your input,
Chris

To be sure the HDD is not spinning, put a CF card in the 722, and set the 722 to CF.

Is the concern the hard drive or heat it generates (if any)?  IDE hard drives should last a long, long time (tens of thousands of hours).

Does the HD activity light come on at all? I'm pretty sure it doesn't, but I haven't monitored it for THAT long of a time before.
Out of the game … for now?

The concern was about wear and tear on the HD.  When I use it to burn mic cables in, it sets in the corner of the room.  I'll check for the activity light the next time.  I never thought about that.  Also, thanks for the info regarding IDE drives.  +T's all around.

I spoke with a tech at SD today and asked about the HDD spinning. Even though the activity light is not on, the HDD may continue to spin for a couple of minutes after power up, or stopping the unit. Leaving the unit on without playing, or recording will not cause the HDD to spin.

I remember reading this in another thread about the new 702 series CF recorders they make.  I think the consensus was that the HD will spin up when you power on the system, even if you have it set to a CF card for the 722/744 recorders.  So you can't just take the HD out and make it into a 702 box.  But if you're just burning in cables, I wouldn't worry much about the hard drive.  Heat is bad for hard drive life, so don't leave it on for 100 hours sitting in the sun, but if it's just sitting in your house it should be getting fine ventilation.

Must say I am highly sceptical to burning in mic cables makes any difference. Crazy idea in my book. But I guess if you believe it makes a difference it is your choice.
