Plug the AT822 mic XLR output into Denecke AD-20
« on: June 28, 2006, 02:34:39 PM »
Hello everyone !

I'm sorry to start a new thread for this newbie question, but ...
I'll become an happy owner of a Denecke AD-20 soon ... I bought it to increase the sound level of my AT822 in order to record quiet ambient sounds with my njb3.
I'm asking me for the best quality way to connect the mic stereo output (XLR female) to the preamp (two XLR male). I already own a XLRF to 3,5mm stereo miniplug  cable and a XLRF to two 3,5mm mono mini plug with the 1/4" adaptators cable.

The differents ways I've found are :
- a stereo mini plug female to two XLRM cable to use with the first cable I have
- two cables: mono 1/4" female plug to XLRM or two adaptators: female 1/4" to XLRM to use with the second cable
- a XLRF to two mono XLRM cable

I'm sure the all XLR solution would be better ... The problem is that I don't know wich cable to get. I'm new in taping and XLR and can't find with assurance the way to connect the mic to the preamp.
Will an ordinary XLR Y cable (XLRF to two XLRM) does what I need ? I'm afraid of the stereo out : will the sound signal be divided in left and right on the two XLRM outputs ? Don't I need a splitter cable or is it the same thing as the Y cable ? Is it the stuff of an adaptator wich splits the stereo signal to two mono ?

Could you please lead me to the right cable(s) or adaptator(s) to get ?

Thank you
and thanks for the amount of taping knowledge there is here !

the at822 passes a stereo signal( left and right channel) so what you need to do is get some female adapters of some sort. The type of adapter you need depends on the type of cable you are using from the at822.  I am currently experimenting with a UA5, and what I do is run my XLR's into a stereo mini-jack (1/8"), and then into a female stereo mini jack-mono left and right XLR male plugs. This allows you to adjust the gain on each capsule on your pre-amp. XLR adapters are pretty inexpensive, and I am sure your local music shop or rat shack might be able to furnsih the adapters.

hope this helps

since your at822 is battery powered only, the cabling that comes with it is all unballenced.  with either of the 2 included cables that come with your mic you are going to need to turn the 1/8 mini(s) (either one TRS or 2 TS) into 2 xlr m.

the easiest way (although maybe not the best) is to use the 10' cable that came with your mic, the one that terminates in 2 TS mini and use the provided adapters that make them 2 TS 1/4.  then you can plug that into this:

which is a female 1/4 to male xlr adapter (which will accept balanced and unbalanced inputs)

otherwise, if it is something that you are going to use a lot and dont want all that bulk, i would contact one of the cable makers on the board to see if they can provide you a cleaner solution.

Thank you for your answers : sure you're helping !
So the simpliest, cheapest way to connect the devices is to get XLR male adaptators to plug into the ad20 ?
I lost lots of time in researching an all XLR solution in order to keep the best quality (I thought it was much better without adaptators and in one cable) ... Is the difference negligible ?
