Static / Rattle ID help needed
« on: July 05, 2006, 06:11:05 PM »
So I'm really dissapointed, this past weekend I was given the opportunity to tape a band I have been dying to see for two years, I was treated great (admitted early to setup, told if anyone from the venue gave me a problem that the band's management would handle it, etc.) and now I am listening to the recording, and I hear a low-level but annoying static sound in the right channel.

I have attached a small sample where it's fairly evident. Here's the details:

This is from the 1st song of the headliner's set. The static is the same all the way through the set. This noise is almost non-existant during the opening band's set, but the openers were slightly quieter. There's also no static during quiet parts like applause, end of set, etc.

I had to turn the -10 db pad on the C4's for both bands to stop overloading the JB3 levels. Once I did, the levels were set conservatively, and do not appear anywhere close to brickwalling in Audition. This IS the first time I've used the -10 dB switch, but I've never heard something like this before on other recordings with this rig.

It seems to me to occur at a specific frequency, on big bass hits. I recall hearing rattling from the speaker cabinets during the concert, but not this often.

Any thoughts as to whether this is cable, mic, or PA related?

it's much more evident with headphones - all I can describe it as, is a rattling sound in right channel only, listen for it with the bass or kick drum are loud (most obviuos at the beginning of the clip, but there throughout)

I'm not clear on the details of the -10db pad, but is it possible that even though the signal being sent to the pre-amp is cut by 10, the mics were still be overloaded? The batteries in the PS-2 had only been used for the opening set.

In order to get the DIN spacing, my right microphone was pointed pretty much right at the right stack, and it was also closer than the left stack, though still probably 70 feet away.
