Do yourself a favor and go see that movie while it is in theaters with a good sound system.  That movie is UNBELIEVABLE.  By far the best "concert movie" I have ever seen......Go see it.

Anyways.

Yeah...I'm a mic watcher...(dork)......  So during the movie I noticed that there was  a bunch of onstage mics.  The mics looked like a mic in a tube attaced to a big disk.  (imagine a dixie cup in the middle of a paper plate...with a mic in it).  Im assuming these are directional mics but have no idea.

Anyone see em?  or know what they are called?  or what the purpose is?  ...Just curious.

Thanks in advance.

(who will see that movie again another 2-3 times bc it is F'n unbelievable)

I saw one of the beasties on a latenight talk show talking about this movie.  They shot the movie by picking 50 people that were going to the show and giving them hi-8 video cameras to shoot their perspective of the concert.  60 camera's total including the 10 they had placed on stage.  The most amazing thing was that they got all 50 camera's back.  I definately want to see that movie just for the "ultimate archival" approach to the filming of it.  I am about as far removed from being a besties fan as anyone could be, but the concept is very cool.

I do think taping is the reality of the business..it is also an impetus for artists to create studio CDs that are ART, not just another recording...    Fareed Haque  2-4-2005

saw it last thursday, and was very impressed. don't know about the mics, but they had them on the whole tour. i saw them in atlanta, and they had them there. some of the shots were off, but it was a bunch of randoms doing the filming. i like when they split the screen up, and show all 60 shots. major props to the B Boys for pulling that off.

Do yourself a favor, rent or better yet, buy "The Last Waltz." I find it hard to believe that a Beastie's Movie is better than that  :o.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but I think comparing it Last Waltz isn't fair.  No director, no slick production, or even a knowledgeable camera crew.  This is a unique concept for documenting a music performance and from everything I read, it sounds like they pulled it off incredibly well.  I posted a New York Times article about the project back in January:

I love how the band was able to return the video cameras that were used to the stores from which they were purchased!
