cards or omnis?
« on: August 08, 2006, 10:17:39 AM »
i will be taping greensky bluegrass at work on the 15th and was thinking :hmmm: :hmmm:.last time i ran cards onstage din and it sounded good. http://www.archive.org/details/gsbg2006-05-16.flac16 how would omnis sound onstage. the band plays into one mic and sings into another mic right above it. so how far would i split the omnis or should i try a j-disc? should i even run split omnis since they are playing into one mic? oh yeah, running onstage is the only option in this room.

And, yes, I know I suck about getting stuff circulated.  ;)

Due to the spacing of bluegrass musicians surrounding a single mic, I would guess that split omnis might not work quite right, and that you would not get much separation if you kept the split within the diameter of the players, if using omnis it seems like a centered j-disc could sound awesome. Just hypothesizing though, I only have cards so I've never run into this situation personally.

Good luck!

You would do well with splits about 3 or 4' spread IMO.  Since you have already tried the cards, you should try splits just for posterities sake!  Might want to try thoes c-4 cards x/y too.  That is a nice config for up close with mics that aren't painfully bright.

I do think taping is the reality of the business..it is also an impetus for artists to create studio CDs that are ART, not just another recording...    Fareed Haque  2-4-2005

Dave, I *might* be up there for that show, in which case a j-disc would be great.  Since I don't have a j-disc, I usually run omni's in a really wide ORTF pattern, really wide, about 160-170*.  It produces very nice imaging, but I'm pretty sure a j-disc would be even sharper.  If you've built one, I'd defintiely run it.  Split omni's onstage in Barley's would be a little bit too chatty, I'd think.
