the mxl2003 is supposed to be a real easy mic to mod and they supposedly really need it. I'm not sure about this one. From what I understand the capsul for most mxl's are from 797 in China, and the studio projects mics use the same one. In a discussion I read somewhere about modding a SP B1 it was said that the electronics are pretty good and not much improvement can easily be had. It was then suggested that if the person really wanted to mod a mic they should look at the mxl2003. So, I got from that, that for a tiny bit more money, a b1 is better than a 2003. My logic tells me that you would be better with a b3 (sp multipattern) than the mxl but you never know untill you use and listen to them. I have the c-1's (card ld's) from sp and I am very happy with them for up close stuff. I really don't care for any LD mics when used from the section though.
