just get a da20mkII... they're work horses!!!!! you should be able to get them from well under $300 on ebay.

can i play 90m tapes in the da20mkII?  i thought i remembered hearing that one of the tascams can't play the 90m tapes.  thanks for all the advice, i was looking at the r300 on ebay but after hearing about nick's issues i think i'll pass on it.

To play 90m's on my da30mkII you have to put a small piece of tape over the "tape length detection holes" on the left side of the tape. No problem after that. Just make sure that the piece of tape comes back out with the tape.

what do you guys think about the R500s?

love it. i have one and it's a brute.  it's a 4motor transport and will play 90m tapes without a single prob.  i've even played a 120meter tape for cloning.  

to check head hours:

Menu > Jog Shuttle until "HOUR ## ##" shows.
