Okm -> mixpre... With or without a3 adapter?
« on: October 07, 2006, 06:07:03 PM »
Hi.

I am planning to buy a pair of okm´s to do field recordings in urban environments, so no super low naturesounds etc.

I use an r1 with a mixpre.

My question is whether i need the a3 adapter or not? its quiet a bit cheaper without..
The mixpre can provide 15 and 48 phantom power, but will 15 be too much for the okm´s ? Also, im planning to use my fem minijack -> dual male phono with xlr adapters, will this even be able to pass on the phantom power?

And last:) Which ones would you recommend? Im thinking the rock ones are mostly for recording very loud sources, which i dont need that much. Relatively low noise is much more important.

Best regards

I have the Soundman OKMII Rx "Rock" mics. According to the instruction manual, they will take up to 10V of normal powering.

From the dacs-audio.com in the OKM FAQ section:

"Q: Can I use Phantom Power with the mics?

A: No. Phantom Power will damage the mic. If you do require the mic to plug into a phantom power device, we recommend our PPA Phantom Power Adapter, which converts the 48V Phantom Power into 7.5V for use with the mics, whilst giving a much better signal to noise ratio."

Basically, what that PPA Phantom Power Adaptor does is take the 48V phantom power and convert it to a lower voltage (probably around 9V) so the mics don't get fried by the high voltage. The PPA Phantom Power Adaptor also provides the mini-plug input and XLR outputs needed to interface a phantom power supply with the mics.

Dumb side question, but where can you buy the OKMs without the A3 module?

ah too bad..
But it makes more sense to just buy the a3, since its more than half the price! Unless of course the ppa reduces the noise significantly.

You can buy them here:) http://www.thomann.de/de/search_dir.html?sw=okm

Danm i thought i could avoid paying for the a3 also..

Then i cant afford the klassik/studio ones, would the OKMII klassik with an a3 adapter be allright for city fieldrecordings and so on?

Thanks for your answer, best regards
