Shouldn't be an issue. Are you sure that the hard drive in the iRiver is OK?

Not getting the 'cyclic redundancy check' error are you?  If so, that is indicative of a dodgy hardrive on the iRivers.

that was my other question.  how can you check for hd sector damage? i couldn't find anything on the manufacturer's site.  would not defragging ever also be a factor?  the thing is if i try transferring on a pc instead, i never have problems.

nope no crc errors.

There was one other person on here who had a similar issue.  I think he gave up in the end and just transferred via a a non-mac.  Have you tried transferring with both firmwares (rockbox/iriver)?

I think this is an issue with the Mac OX 10.4.x Finder and large files on certain models of external hard drive.

Whenever I run into this problem, I've always been able to work around it by opening the file (from the iRiver) using Sound Studio (importing can take a l-o-n-ng time, and appear to freeze up, but unlike the Finder Sound Studio won't give up), and then once the file has been read in fully choosing Save As... to put the imported file on my hard drive.  But this didn't solve a similar problem for someone else.

Be sure your iRiver is well charged or on AC power, as this takes quite a bit of juice.

tried that yeah.  not a bad suggestion.  didn't seem to make that much of a difference.  Will_S's response seems to be where the problem lies...  damn this might make things like transferring over non-.wavs a problem...

Kind of a crude workaround, but I know rockbox offers the option to autosplit recordings at intervals much smaller than 2 GB.  Since the 2 GB splits are seamless, I presume the shorter ones are as well.  And I've never had a problem transferring small files off the iRiver.
