Interview Mics Recommendation Requested
« on: October 26, 2006, 09:15:55 PM »
Hi,

Any recommendations for two mics to be used for recording interviews into an R-09 or Zoom H4?
The eventual output would be to a Podcast. It is to record two people talking so would two omni's still be the right way to go?

Here is a link for another mic gear approach for interview and ambient used so far by at least half dozen podcasters and 4 dozen well known independent NPR type producers worldwide: www.sonicstudiios.com/mp3.htm#radio

I own one of these:

Electro Voice RE50/B - Omni-Directional Handheld Dynamic Shock Mounted ENG Microphone (Black)

It was recommended to me by a friend who works for the local news in SF (which is a pretty big station by "local news" standards). He said they used this mic all of the time in the field (and other mics too). It is bombproof and virtually indestructible (OK, maybe not, but it sure feels like it, and ENG news outfits don't use stuff that can't handle heavy field use). It also has virtually zero handling noise and comes with built in pop-filtering. Best of all, it actually sounds great being an omni an all, and don't let the omni thing scare you away -- it does have some directionality because of the ball-gag like container/pop-filter the element is down inside of. Also, omnis just sound better, but more importantly give way less handling noise too, and as long as the mic is close to the speaker's mouth, it can be used even in noisy environments pretty well. The only downside is that it is a dynamic mic (which also has its pluses too, like no phantom needed), so it requires a little more gain than you might be used to. Anyway, not saying this is the best mic out there by any stretch, but I can personally vouch for it cause I own and use one.

Not sure on exact location.  Could be standing or sitting at a table.  So boundary mics if I plan to record stereo (one channel per speaker)?
