I know this is an old topic, but I happened accross it and felt it neccessary to comment on the Church-Audio mics as I've been using various sets of their preamps and mics for over 3 years, and roughly 100 recordings.
This is an honest, unbiased, unsolicted recomendation- I doubt you will find any mics and pre for the price range that Church Audio hits that even come close to the dependability and sound quality of the church audio gear.
I don't have time to go into details about all of my positive experiences with Chris and his gear, but I've been very happy with his gear. The only thing that has put them on the shelf some lately is that I've been using an Earthworks SRO > Mini-me rig for open taping situations, but I just recently recorded again with his gear with very positive results.
Chris, as he admits, is not the most eloquent typist, but I've actually spoken with him on the phone a few times, and he is in fact very intelligent, and definitely knows his stuff, and has many years of live sound experience.
For the money, I think you can't go wrong, and I actually wouldn't consider any rig under $300 to replace his that I spent less than $100 on.
Sincerely,
Manley
