As if the quality of the nbox is not enough . . .  it comes with the best damn customer service out there.
It looks as though my problem has been located and fixed.  Nick helped me along and told me what to do.
Keep in mind, nothing is "simple" when you're as non-techie as I am, but it turned out it was a simple battery connector that was the culprit. 
One of the small sides on the corner had been slightly bent back.  A simple adjustment and it looks like I'm back in business.
