First Show - Have a few questions
« on: December 12, 2006, 11:19:13 PM »
Okay, I'm completely new to the audience recording world. I completely support it but I'm definately new.

I'm going to a show in January on the 11th at a pretty big venue. See picture.

It's for a band that is somewhat heavy and there will be loud music. It's not anything like DMB or Phish. I just really want a decent recording.

I'd like to know what I would need for a stealthy (only because they haven't gotten back to me on the rules of audo recording) setup, with good power to record about an hour straight and still have some juice left over.

The site says that the venue is 26,000 sq. ft. Not sure how big that is but it looks big so there's probably gonna be some echo.

Throw whatever questions you may have at me and I'll answer them fully to help you experts pin-point the right setup for me :)

Thanks in advance!
Josh

I know this doesn't apply to stealth recording but since you may record openin the future - always duct tape your stand to the floor, seat, rail, whatever. It will save yur mics. First tihng I do when I setup.

1. Read the Archive secton of this website. Not all of it. Just the subjects that look like they might answer your questions.

2. You might want to tell us your budget. Otherwise I will tell you to go out and buy about $5000 worth of gear.

3. Just a little FYI, having the username jsimpson might confuse some people here because there is a frequent poster here with that name (aka Simp Dog). Some people may make some "inappropriate jokes" about one's sexual orientation ;)  Justs a heads up!

Best of luck. I hope you know what you're getting yourself into.

Haha I could care less what people say about me. I just wanna record shows.

Thanks for the help dudes but my budget is real low. I lost my job and Christmas cleaned me out big time. I gotta get some coinage together before I can spend a whole lot.

Hey, as for the venue, almost all of the recordings I've seen or heard from PromoWest have been from the floor, but if you're stealthing I'd be tempted to throw my coat over the rail right in the middle and then just let the mics rest on top of it, obviously concealed in some way.
Pockets full of nickels and nothing left to eat, and I'm stuck behind a semi on Soniat Street.

that's the R.H.L. in Balto, right? if so i have made many good recordings from the balcony. all of them have been open recording situations, but for stealthing purposes i think the balcony DFC may be your best bet. the stacks are high off the ground and you may be able to utilize the balcony like shane suggests.

Yeah it's Ram's Head in Baltimore.

The thing is, I don't know about anything you guys are saying, besides getting good recording locations obviously, but I'm trying to become an expert on it before Jan 11th haha.

no worries, if you do some research on this board you'll gain a lot of info and know-how.
first figure out if this is definitely an open or stealth recording opportunity. then, decide on a budget you are willing to spend on equipment. you have a plethora of options depending on the answers to these questions. from the sound for it you are looking for a decent entry level rig. mics and a recording device are an obvious must, it's what to put in between the two you need to figure out.
keep in mind many mics require power which is provided by either a battery box or a preamp in most cases depending your needs.
this is a good place to ask questions.

edit to say: http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=76766.0

this could be a great solution for your needs. just grab a micro track and your good to go.
