DAT>PC>DVD Most reccomended methods?
« on: January 24, 2007, 04:01:45 PM »
Hello board:
So, its time to do the colosal task of backing up up or..... you name it..... archive my tapes on DVD`s.
Most of them are in 48, so I will resample to 44.1 for future CD transfers and further listening.
Would love storing on a portable hard disk drive, but if it dies one day I will regret it!  :o

I have these scenarios:

DAT>PC>FLAC>DVD
DAT>PC>DVD

The questions:
FLAC or not FLAC? Nero for archiving on DVD`s more recomendations? Soundforge to capture? computer settings? I have 1 GB of RAM

BTW:
My transfer will be:
Sony M1 using Sony 7 pin cable Tosslink > Midiman CO3 to convert Tosslink to coaxial > Midiman 24/96 card > Sound forge or pro tools > DVD using Nero

Thanks for the input
Ed :)

I did the same, and used FLAC for my long term archival of the files.  I also stored them on RAID'd hard drives so that hardware failure would not ruin my work.  So short of a catastrophe at your house, like a fire, RAID shold provide relatively safe redundancy.

I also invested in a DAT DDS drive and flashed the firmware to read audio DATs.  Incredible labor and time saver.

There previously has been alot of discussion on hear about decoding errors w/ FLAC over time, which is why i stopped FLAC'ing my masters.  To clarify, I keep the master file as a WAV, the untracked uneditted 48k (or now 24 bit) files.  After that, if i am gonna make and keep a CD version of the show, i might split and flac that, as long as the master is preserved.

What type of drive did you buy, and where?  And how do you go about flashing the firmware.  If there is a thread on this, I'd love to read it.  Have you checked error rates, before and after, to see whether the higher speed is causing issues?  I just remember all the problems with the Tascam 302.  Any help would be appreciated.  I have a lot of tape to deal with.  Thanks.

I was able to buy mine on a whim at a computer fair, but eBay seems like the place for many to get theirs.  Flashing was a bit of a pain, cause I am not a PC guy (Mac only), but once I read the forums and told the guy doing it for me what to do, it was no problem.  Check out:

http://www.datman.com/tbul/dmtb_014.htm
http://web.ncf.ca/aa571/datfaq.htm

And froma forum:
Well, today I got a Sony SDT-9000 with AHA chipset.
It arrived with the 0600 firmware from Sony.

First thing I did was trying Sony's own Firmware Tools (SDT-9000_FW_0601.exe) to flash it to 0601. It worked nicely. Next step was downloading the SGI 12.2 firmware from http://kickme.to/sdt9000 . The archive is called "SDT9000_122_audio.zip" and it contains the file "122.ex". So I assumed that file would be the 12.2 firmware. I copied it into the program folder of Sony's FWTools (C:\Program Files\Sony Electronics). Fine. I then fired up the FWTools, it shows I have firmware version 0601. I kept the FWTools window open and renamed the 0601 firmware from "sdt-9000_0601.t90" -> "sdt-9000_0601.backup". Then I renamed the "122.ex" -> "sdt-9000_0601.t90" and switched back to the FWTools window. There I hit the button to install the firmware and yep, it flashed my drive to 12.2. Nice. I fired up dat2wav and it worked fine. Thanks everyone. That shows that also drives with the AHA chipset will work without 13.1. Just leave the flashing in DOS-mode and use Sony's very own flashing tools. Keep in mind to first start up the FWTools app and then rename the firmware file. It won't work otherwise.

I also have a the Sony firmware if you need it.  Just PM me and I'll email it to you.

Thanks, and +T.  I will start looking for a drive first, and then start working on the technical aspects after I get it and install it.  What size bay do you need for the drive, or can it go in an external enclosure and be connected via USB or firewire?

I think these will fit in a 5 inch bay, but mine is external.  Also, most of them are SCSI, so you'll need a SCSI card, or, run it like I run mine; through a SCSI to firewire adapter.  That is, SCSI from the DAT drive, to the firewire converter, then FW to my CPU (again, a Mac).  USB and FW converters are readily available on eBay.
