ck63 > Active Cables > JK Labs DVC > Apogee Mini-Me > M1

I have a tape that I patched out of a few years back with this lineage. It's my favorite tape to date, it sounds so natural, or at least, colored to sound exactly the way I remember the show.

I'm curious about how AKG caps and active cable work, how they terminate, and what this kind of setup would cost. Where can you even buy active cables for these mic elements, and when you run a setup like this, do you keep the mic bodies down near your bag or something? Or do the active cables take the place of a mic body?

I'm also running into an R09 now, so the need for an A/D is pretty much out the window, but a nice small pre might not be a bad thing. At least something to provide smoothe phantom power - I have a Denecke PS2 and a UA5.

I'm looking to slim down a rig for international travel with very excellent sound quality, and base it around the Edirol R09 that I've been enjoying very much. It seems to do a very good job even with the built in mics, but I'm looking to build a rig that can work well in both open taping environments as well as slightly stealty situations.

Thank you all very much for any input.

well you've picked a tough sound to chase down. No one currently manufactures active cables for the AKG 480s. The JK Labs DVC unit was custom built by an individual who is no longer building them. Finding one used is practically impossible. It's my understanding that this unit did act as a replacement for the mic bodies.

There is possibly going to be a new manufacturer of a similar unit sometime in the near future, but details about that unit aren't available yet.

That looks a lot like Jon Ice's setup. His recordings smoke! Pretty unlikely to find a JK system, so best to just enjoy his recordings and hope the NBox setup when and if it is release sounds similar.
