Topic: Heavy duty stand recommendations

Hey all... I'm looking to update my stand.

I'm currently using a Manfrotto 3333.  It works perfectly with my A57 and 2 mics.  Works pretty well with a smaller markbar with 2X480s and 2XTLs.  Although it tends to slightly lean back and forth through the show.  So far it's been minimal enough it has not bothered me, but at this point there is no chance of anyone clamping on me.

I'm thinking of running one of marks new 18" bars with the 4 mic config, however, I'm sure my 3333 could not handle it.   Does anyone have any recommendations for a good stand that would run the bar, TLs, and 480s stably at a minimum of 9' (12' would be nice) and ideally (optionally) be sturdy enough for clampers?

I'm not to familliar with stands... got the 3333 with my first rig and never looked to upgrade so if there are any nuances that I should be looking for let me know.  Feel free to explain to me like I am a 3 year old.

I would think the 3333 would be way sturdy enough.  how big are you making the foot print??  I've seen those big bogens with a full on tree on them.

besides outdoors at a BIG venue why do you need to run that high??

I've been adjusting my footprint to see if it helps.... but the main problem seems to be the taller I extend the more I wiggle (of course.)

At local venues where I am just running my 480s the stand is perfect..... However, anytime I decide to run the markbar + 2X480s + 2XTLs the weight at the top gets really heavy (those TLs are like mini dumb bells and then mark bar is heavy too).  Minimal wind/air conditioning can cause the stand to sway side by side if I raise the stand at 9'.  9' for me seems to be the magic number where the crowd starts fading out.  At that point anyone clamping causes a major lean in the stand that just makes me nervous and makes the swaying greater.  I'd hate to take a tumble.

The 18" markbar will be considerably heavier/longer.  I'd be mostly using it at festivals to run the 480s din and the TLs omni as split as possibile where I would like to go above 9'.  I did this with the regular markbar at Vegoose and the stand swayed alot and had a hard time taking a clamper.

The issue to me seems not to be the stand footprint, but the build of the poles that extend from it.

I got one of these 10 foot stands on EBay about a year ago, and have gotten a lot of comments from other tapers about how nice and heavy duty it is. 
It's pretty light for how robust it is.  Nice price, too (cheep ). 
I think that because it has only 3 sections, it is a lot less wobbly than other 10 footers.

I've got a 3333 as well. I've had 4 pairs of mics on it, and never had a problem like you describe.. are you taping it down good enough?

I went with a Manfrotto Avenger 630.  10'8", four risers, folds down to 36", weighs less than 5 lbs.  Very solid holding my TLMs, and others clamped on.

I bought a "Heavy Duty Light Stand" off Ebay for about $20 few years back.  Its a Bosh (Bash???) brand light stand.  It holds my TLs no problem, no leaning or swaying...

I have one that is thrown in the closet....definately not worth the money.  Every section is stripped out.
