Help me install Rockbox
« on: February 20, 2007, 11:03:23 PM »
Ok...just got a Iriver h120.  I have ran through the steps of installing rockbox and I think I am almost their but something just isnt right.

It boots up with the bootloader then it for 1/2 a second I think i see "rockbox" pop up then it goes to a screen with the batt meter... something like a volume meter...a square box..then a "return" arrow

then it has a "folder" with RECORD beside it and
then what looks like an x with rockbox written beside it

when I choose record it then gives 2 options audio / voice...but nothing comes up

when I choose rockbox it shoots to that quick glimpse of "rockbox" then returns to the above.

Welcome to RockBox

I think it's best you read the manual. Really.

What you're seeing is the file browser which is where you end up when you boot
To record, open the menu by pressing the A-B button. There you can select recording.
Be sure to set the recording settings first (source, encoding,...).

Take some time to play around with it before actually taping a concert.

It boots up with the bootloader then it for 1/2 a second I think i see "rockbox" pop up then it goes to a screen with the batt meter... something like a volume meter...a square box..then a "return" arrow

then it has a "folder" with RECORD beside it and
then what looks like an x with rockbox written beside it
This is the filebrowser. The top line you see is the statusbar

when I choose record it then gives 2 options audio / voice...but nothing comes up
You've just entered the 'record' subdirectory and you see two more subdirectories. This whole 'record' subdir tree is created by the official iriver firmware. If it's empty you can remove it (highlight the 'record' dir and long-press the joystick, select delete subdir)

when I choose rockbox it shoots to that quick glimpse of "rockbox" then returns to the above.
Congratulations on using RoLo, the RockBox loader. That 'rockbox.iriver' file is in fact the rockbox program, by selecting it you executed it which means you restarted RockBox.

So your saying I did it right?....if so rockbox is way more confusing than the iriver firmware that comes with it

I wouldn't say it's more confusing - I had to read the manual of iriver completely to find out the buttons to use and seeing the number of users that made foldable keymaps to take with you, it wasn't exactly intuitive.

Just learn to use RockBox. There are no fancy icons but a ton of functionality.

You start up in the browser, it shows you your directories and files

If you want to do something else than play a file (like recording), press A-B for the menu and select what you want to do.

All very easy imho...

It has been my experience that the function of the buttons depends on the build of RockBox you are using, as well. Like Petur said, practice at home before taping something you really want a recording of.
Naiant X-X > SP-SPSB-1 > M10
Superlux S502 > Denecke PS-2 > Hosa MIT-435 > M10

The official RockBox version hasn't had its buttonmapping changed in quite some time.
Patched builds however tend to stick extra features on some buttons. The REP (Recording Enhancement Pack) for example uses the REC button for some quicklaunching (iirc)
