Outdoor Festival: Cards or Hypers?
« on: May 07, 2007, 04:07:13 PM »
I've got an outdoor festival coming up in a couple weeks which I plan on recording 007 style.
As a result of the newest little addition to my family, a beautiful pair of MK4's, I find it necessary to ask:  MK41's or MK4's?
I'm thinking I should go with my hypers, but I wanted to hear what everyone else thought.

I'd say that if your "007 style" locale puts you up close, try those new lovely additions. If you're squinting to see the stage, stick with the 41's.

Hi Stu ~ Thanks for the response.  I've got VIP passes and hope to get up fairly close.
I definitely won't be squinting.  Hmmmm . . . maybe I'll get to play with the MK4's a little sooner than I thought.  :)

I like hypers in more situations than a lot of folks on this board, but I'd still suggest cards in this situation.  Among other things, cards tend to be less sensitive to wind noise than hypers, and its hard to provide the best wind protection when stealthing.

Up close I would certainly go cards. You might consider doing a Pepsi challenge with both sets of caps. Perhaps early in the day, when some crappy Sha Na Na cover band is playing, try the 4's for part and the 41's for part. While you might not have any sort of playback options for an immediate conclusion as to what to run for the festival, you'll better understand the differences of the  new/old caps with your pre/recorder. (Longest sentence I've ever typed  ::))

And congrats on the new MK4's! You will not be disapointed.

You know, Stu, that's not a bad suggestion.  It'll be easy enough to change caps.  I might just do that.  It's a two-day festival -- there's bound to be some band crappy enough to help with my little experiment.  I will report back with my findings, then send the recording(s) to dorrcoq.  ;)

No need to send it, just put it on DIME. ;D

definitely cardiods, we commonly run hypercardiods indoors to reduce chatter and background noise at the expense of a fuller sounding recording, but outdoors that background noise will dissipate into the air so you will have no need for the benefit hypers offer indoors, run cards and make beautiful open air recordings

Cards for most open air applications.  But if you have not already done so, invest in a pair of Dead Rats for those breezy days.  While cards are less susceptible to wind than hypers, they are not immune, and wind can completely destroy a recording.

Just dropping my two-cents. If my only choices were cards or hypers, I would definitely run the cards, but it's been my experience that running omni's upclose in an outdoor setting can sound amazing! And what could be easier then running 4060's > R09. Especially 007 style! If you'd consider doing a stealth comp of the two setups - mk4 versus 4060 - I'd gladly send over my DPA's and R-09 to you Josephine.
