DPA - best taping position..
« on: May 21, 2007, 04:32:02 AM »
Hi all,

expecting my DPA4061s this week. Next week I got two gigs upcoming.
Now I know these DPAs are omni. The gigs I will visit are in pretty small rooms/clubs.

What position would be the best for me??

In front of the stacks (left/right), or FOB?? I'm using the DPAs straight into my Microtrack24/96.

Where it sounds good.

If you need to know a possition, I suggest making a equalateral triangle as shown below....

stack  Stage   stack
   - ----- ---- -
     -            -
       -        -
          -    -
           You
Neumann KM185mp OR DPA ST2015-> Grace Design Lunatec V2-> Tascam DR-100mkIII

Or better get closer to one side only (and yes, loose some `stereo`) if the SNR because of the crowd is an issue.

I've always been a FOS taper and never regretted it.
I'd never change

well...large venues will have alot of reverb the further back you are, so try to get closer, smaller venues stand wherever it sounds decent.  sounds moves 1ft/ms so 20' from the stage is a 20ms delay.  you don't really hear any sort of delay until you hit the 35ms mark so try to stay at least that close.
Really not very evil at all now...

the triangle is your geometric guide to good recording

but don't forget those ears either
Core-sound HEB 4060s > iRiver h120
or
AT853 > AT8531 > ToddR mod SBM-1 > iRiver h120
