JB3 Help
« on: July 17, 2007, 03:19:07 PM »
I recently purchased a used JB3 and the notmad explorer software. I also downloaded and installed JBDrv_1_21_01a driver and JB3_PCFW_US_1_40_06 firmware.

I am able to use the nomad explorer to listen to some mp3's left on the JB3 by the previous owner through my computer speakers, but when I copy a file to my desktop then try to re-open it in Windows Media Player or Itunes it won't play. This is the case with mp3's left on the JB3 and also a test wav line in recording I made with the JB3.

Any suggestions would be aprreciated.

Thanks,

Rich

I've seen that.  I'm guessing you have a bad case of DRM (Digital Rights Management). :P   Where ever those tunes came from, they have a copy protection scheme to make sure you can't copy them to another device.  DRM sucks.

If the above is true, don't waste any time trying new firmware or software.   There are probably some sort of exotic cracking tools on the web, but is it worth the hassle?  If there are a few songs you really want you could play them analog out into another recorder's analog in...  or possible play them with Nomad explorer while having audacity in record mode all within the computer... either way adds an analog gen which you will never hear.

Thanks for the post, I was thinking it may be the copyright protection for the mp3's, but what about the test wav line in recording I made?

Are you only able to open the JB3 recordings in certain programs?  Windows Media Player, Sound Recorder, and Itunes all would not let me open up my recording.

you can get around dmr by burning and ripping the songs back to your comp
pain in the ass but it works
iTunes plays jb3 recordings on a mac fine (although you need xnjb to connect) so i assume on a pc it would too
Mics - AKG ck61/ck63 (c480b & Naiant actives), SP-BMC-2
XLR Cables - Silver Path w/Darktrain stubbies
Interconnect Cables - Dogstar (XLR), Darktrain (RCA > 1/8) (1/8 > 1/8), and Kind Kables (1/8f > 1/4)
Preamps - Naiant Littlebox & Tinybox
Recorders - PCM-M10 & DR-60D

Still not able to copy my line in recordings from JB3 to computer and open them successfully.

Original owner says I should try reformatting the JB3 drive to see if this helps.  Is this a good idea? and if so how do I go about doing it?

Thanks!

Are you using a PC or Mac? If pc do you have creativeplaycenter to transfer your recordings?

[120] How do I transfer or copy files from one NJB3 to another?

[1] Download and install the latest Firmware
[2] Conect both players with the 4 pin to 4 pin 1394 cable
      [3] Turn both units on
[4] Go to Music Library, All Tracks view.
[5] Press the Side Scroller and select Send Track
[6] You can then select each file, one at a time and send it to the other player.

Note: Copy protected tracks such as WMA(with DRM) or preloaded content cannot be transfered from the player units.
[250] How do I connect my NJB3 to my computer for transferring recordings?

The documentation which comes with the NJB3 should address this question in more detail.  But basically, you need these components in place:

[1] NJB3 firmware for the NJB3 to function
[2] PC drivers to enable firewire
[3] PC drivers to provide connectivity between Windows and NJB3
[4] File Manager software to provide a view/edit interface to the NJB3

The NJB3 should come with [1] already on it (though you may wish to upgrade - see below).  Windows should have taken care of [2] already.  So now you need [3] and [4].

[3] There's a separate set of NJB3 drivers which must be installed on the PC in order for Windows to recognize the NJB3 over the firewire port/cable.  These drivers should have come on a CD with your NJB3.  Since Nomadness and Creative (below) either don't seem to have them any longer or they are difficult to track down, they're in the TS Reference | Software | JB3 (www.taperssection.com/reference/software/jb3/).  Nomadness also may still host the driver upgrades (http://www.nomadness.net/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=viewdownload&cid=7).  You might also find them on Creative's website, here.  See #2 or #3 under the Drivers section.

[4] In addition to the drivers above which provide connectivity between Windows and the NJB3, you'll need another set of software to provide an interface that allows you as a user to view and edit the contents of the NJB3.  Best option is NOMAD Explorer, available in TS Reference | Software | JB3 (www.taperssection.com/reference/software/jb3/).

Creative might still host Creative's File Manager software (ugh) (http://www.nomadness.net/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=viewdownload&cid=12).  And Redchair Software's Notmad Explorer (trial, $20 for permanentlicense) (http://www.redchairsoftware.com/notmad/trial.php) costs a few bucks but works well.  Or Creative's Nomad Explorer may still do the trick (see Applications section, #6, http://www.creative.com, Support | Downloads).  FWIW, I previously used Notmad Explorer and think it's a far better piece of s/w than creative's File Manager, but now I use Nomad Explorer.

I have a PC using Windows XP

I have Creative Play Center and I also purchased the Notmad Explorer software.  I have the same problem with both.

Not sure if this helps but after you upload to your desktop w/ creative play center can you use creative play center to play the new file on your desk top?
Peace

get rid of play center and just use nomad explorer from creative it's barebones like notmad and for recording it's really all you need for getting stuff to your PC
