While not likely after being out of production for over 4-5 years, it always possible there's one of these sitting brand new on a shelf gathering dust somewhere, so it doesn't hurt to ask.

Better chance is to buy from a reliable repair service that fully refurbishes these to be like new, or sometimes better than new.  One outfit I've learned to trust is well know to tapers and found at: www.prodigitalinc.com

Do you need it to play back masters old masters?  I'm curious why you would buy an M1 instead of something that uses media other than tape.

A lot of stealth tapers still prefer DAT or Hi-MD, as opposed to taking the chance of having to give security their memory card, or try to explain to them it's on a hard drive and it can be deleted.

Couldn't one palm off a cheap old SD card just as easily as a DAT tape?  I think the advantage of solidstate memory over tape would be enough to make it worth the effort and you can get a 24-bit recording with the newer options.

I understand your point.  I haven't had to explain the 722 yet ;-) but I make sure I get everything off the HD before I go into a situation where I might have to reformat the HD while someone watches me.

I just like the portability and the durability of the M1.  Pocketable and built like a brick.  I've yet to see a HD recorder quite like it.
My old M1 is about to bite the dust and even though I rarely tape shows anymore I still want one around whenever the urge hits.

or buy a cheap one offa e bay and get it refurbed by western digital. I think they are going for around $175 to 200.

Then look into a iriver h120/h140 or the h320 or h340 models.  With rockbox, their recording beasts.  I used to own a M1, it was in great shape but sold it once I got a H140 and rockboxed it, I never looked back.  Plus, the devices are built very solid and rockbox is quite stable.  Plus, they are a lot smaller than the M1, which I would not consider pocketable.

new would be a bit hard, but keep your eye on the yard sale.  i purchased one earlier in the year (and a buddy of mine purchased one just recently) and we have had no probs at all w/them.  if i had the $ right now, i would be on the lookout for another one (or a D100).

i have an m1 its a sweet piece of gear. the two things i'd be worried about is: the availbility of parts to fix it and availability of dat tapes. good luck

id carry a 64MB card at all times if i were stealthing, meanwhile the INHDD and REAL cf card are ALL GOOD if they make you format the HDD, you still have the cf card
