It was truly, a beautiful thing!! But without complications...I taped the Summer Haze Tour featuring: Ozomatli, Slightly Stoopid and G. Love & Special Sauce at Red Rocks Amphitheater. I used the iRiver HP120 that mmmatt (thanks matt) sold me with his UA-5. So I wasn't too familiar with it at all. Followed the FAQ's and did my general recording settings.
Ozomatli-it was raining and was not about to bring the gear out in the rain under any circumstances.
Slightly Stoopid-was able to set up, fired up the equipment and thought the iRiver was recording BUT I failed to recognize that the "recording time display" wasn't moving, or rather it stayed at all 0's. The levels were moving, but it wasn't recording anything. I forgot to hit the record button on the side. Felt like such an ass!! Really wish I could have taped this band. Kinda reggae'ish, rock-ish but a fun band all together.
G. Love & SS-Figured out what I did wrong and was able to capture this show. Turned out really nice with the gear I used. Even the iRiver performed well but looking forward to using my familiar MT and the ability for 24 bit version.
I do however have a question about the UA-5 and the clip light. I had the Peluso's set at 0dB and the L in setting. I had the UA-5 all set to record via the iRiver. When I started to record I set the mic gain at 3/4's of the way or about the 3 o'clock position. It started clipping so I started to turn setting dials to the left. I ended up at about the 10 o'clock position. At this position the clip light might have lit up about once every 5 minutes or so. Is this okay or do you not want the clip light to flash at all? I was about 20 rows back from the stage behind the sound board folks, 9 feet up in the air and using the cardioid caps.
Also, when I transferred the recording to my PC (windows vista ultimate) I opened the file in Cool Edit Pro and it looks as if the left channel is about 4dB different than the right channel. I think that I just didn't have the dials gain dials perfectly aligned, would you agree? Any-who, I will try to do a little post to it and add it to the archives in a few days or so.
Thanks to everyone for all the help in making this possible whether it was advice or equipment: tonedeaf, mmmatt, Nick's Picks, Nick Graham, Church-Audio, kbergend, the Team Peluso II folks, and everyone in-between that I'm forgetting. (Didn't mean to forget anyone but the wife is rushing me out the door!)
Glad to be a part of this community!!
