some quick tips needed for Edirol R09
« on: August 25, 2007, 12:12:32 AM »
I have taped quite a number of shows with my Iriver H320 with Giant Squid omnis with 9v box/bass rolloff. I have just bought a R 09 today which I want to use to record a show tomorrow.Using the same mic setup as above should I be using ex mic in or line in and approx what kind of level.Show is in 1500 seat theatre about 3/4 way back.band is AOR rock - loud but not overly loud sound levels anticipated.

While ideally I would like to experiment with various inputs & levels at home etc time is against me at present and just need a little pointing in the right direction and I should figure the rest out. Thanks

Suggest using MIC input, with LOW MIC input sensitivity, no bass filter/no auto level, stereo mode switch settings on back of deck.

In the menu you have choice of turning R-09's mic power ON/OFF.  With MIC power off your bass filter will be less effective in reducing bass, and with MIC power on (loads the mic input more) your bass filter will be much more aggressive, so your choice depending on some experience with venue bass sounds and filter box switch selection if having a choice on the powering module.

Setting the R-09's REC level (#1-to-#30 range) might be best starting at #15 and adjusting up/down as needed.

In the menu choice of 24bit bit depth/44.1K sample rate .wav has advantages for CD bit rate compatibility and 24 bit depth allows recording a much lower levels (like <-12 dbm peaks is OK, leaving more headroom against overloads) without losing audio resolution that was an issue with 16 bit recording depth modes that demanded pushing VU levels near -4 dBm peaks for best quality.

Although a bit technical in places, my review of the R-09 might also help your learning curve adjusting settings on this deck.  See: www.sonicstudios.com/r-09revw.htm
