SONY PCM-D1 w/ XLR-1
« on: August 30, 2007, 11:51:09 PM »

I really just need a good data-writer with a digi input. The m/t is crap, the edirol is analog input, and everything else has nice pre's and a/d's which I don't need. I'm running mk4> V3> M1. I'd like to still use V3 as pre and a/d and come out digi 24 bit instead of 16. Has anything else hit the market that is like the m/t but better thought out and built?
What was Sony thinking when the did the 1/8' only deal. Even their old units had multiple inputs. So, I guess the question is: If you're forced to use the Edirol or Sony with analog in, then it's not just writing, so how are the a/d's in these units? I'm pretty satisfied with the a/d in the V3 and would hate to change something that works like a charm. -Michael

The XLR-1? Good to see Sony continues pushing out proprietary equipment for basic use. Give it time, they'll come out with a fragile 43 pin adapter to run digi-in on the PCM-D1....  :)

I take it from the Sony pix, you have a substantial budget...

But for that money, I would pick up a Tascam HD-P2 or Marantz 671.  Both are great 24bit recorders, either SPDIF input or as stand-alone recorders... http://avdeal.nl/productinfo/tascam/HD-P2/HD-P2_Flyer_EN.pdf/

In my mind the XLR-1 is a super-glorified Denecke PS-2...  It should have been a 24bit SBM-1 with XLR inputs...

***Do you have PHISH, VIDA BLUE, JAZZ MANDOLIN PROJECT or any other Phish related DATs/Tapes/MDs that need to be transferred???  I can do them for you!!!***

I will return your DATs/Tapes/MDs.  I'll also provide Master FLAC files via DropBox.  PM me for details.

Sony PCM R500 > SPDIF > Tascam HD-P2
Nakamichi DR-3 > (Oade Advanced Concert Mod) Tascam HD-P2
Sony MDS-JE510 > Hosa ODL-276 > Tascam HD-P2

My thoughts too! The other units you mentioned just seem bigger, are there going to be any reliable hand-held size data-writers coming out soon?
Budget? - The Sony does look cool, but should have some more features at that price?

The Sony D1 has one of the most refined analog process circuitry of any deck regardless of cost.

If you can afford the D1 and the analog inputs can be adapted to accept your mics, then you'll likely not get a better performing all-in-one mic pre-A/D flash portable recorder at more than twice the price.

yeah, at this point, if all you are looking for is a solid, reliable deck that accepts S/PDIF, I would definately recommend the Tascam HD-P2 or the Marantz PMD-671.  Both can be had for a similar price point.  or, if you can wait a bit, the MicroTrack II seems to be promising, and will be cheaper price point than either the HD-P2 or the PMD-671.  probably the most important improvement over the original deck is seamless splits at 2 gigs.  here's a thread with a lot of info:
http://taperssection.com/index.php/topic,88437.90.html
of course, the MTII hasn't yet been released, and the original MT didn't exactly work as advertised when it was originally released, so I'd hold off and wait to see that the features advertised are true, and wait to see how reliable the firmware is (in regards to freezing/crashes).

the edirol's a/d is excellent.
the sony is ridiculously expensive.
there is a "new and improved" version of the MT about to come out...so I say hold your breath for a little bit and see if it is actually a good bit bucket when it does.

I am a bit surprised that it hasn't been more of a success in the taper world, it is a spectacular machine.  I only went to the Sonosax MiniR82 because, if you tape at 24/96, the Sony is autonomous for only about two hours, since it will only tape to the internal 4GB flash OR a "high speed" memory stick (the highest capacity of the "high speed" memory sticks is 4GB, the 8GB memory stick pro duos only record 1 hour 45 minutes and then leave the rest of the card blank).  You have to make a menu selection to switch between the two storage areas.  If Sony brings out a "high speed" memory stick with 8GB or more capacity I might even go back to it.

The lack of capacity you describe may be the reason it has not been more popular.

Michael, go with a Tascam hd-p2 or Marantz 671.  Both have digi or analog inputs, and can be had for 8bills or less new.   Rock solid machines.  If you want to check one out in person (the p2), you can meet me next time I'm out taping in Nashville.
