Arena Taping w/DPA 4061's ( Places like MSG)
« on: October 11, 2007, 12:47:03 PM »
I've heard DPA 4061s are not the best choice when taping far away. Too much "arena reverb"

If I'm taping a show at the garden and I'm section 200 or 300. Would I be better off using 853's instead?

Any help or input is appreciated!

it's not really about the mic, but the patern. omnis can be very boomy in those kind of venues. when in the middle of the arena, the sound will bounce of the 4 walls and if you're farther than 17 meters (~56ft) from the walls, you'll most likely suffer echo and not reverberation. but it all depends on where you're at. (i've never seen the garden)

fwiw, i wear my AT943's 100% of the time in large venues.

You're better off using cards at arena/large venue shows (unless you're right by the stack/PA).
Mics:
AT933/C

Batt-Boxes, Pre-amps:
CA-9100

Recorders:
Edirol R-09
iRiver H120 (CF Modded)
Sony MZ-RH910 Hi-MD

Video: Canon HV20 E

As a rule omnis pick up more of the room while the cards pick up less.  It is their nature.  Omnis hear all around them, which is why they are called omnidirectional (all directions).  Cardiods hear in a heart-shaped pattern, hence cardiod.

The Bartletts just published a new book:  Recording Music on Location.  I cannot recommend this book too much.  It is useful for the beginner through advanced amateur.  He is the tech sound guy and she s the tech writer.  Between the two of them they produce the most readable books.  The finished product transfers their knowledge to you quickly and easily.  It is worth the price and then some.

I hate to be negative but the sound from 200-300 level at MSG will be very bad. Worse than most arenas because the seats are so gradually inclined at MSG, Even the lower level section seats past midcourt are so far away from the stage that you lose the sound and pick up the boominess.

Do you mean the one published last year, or is there a new edition (since you said "just")? The book looks very interesting :)

Thanks for all the replies

I"ll make a note to use the cards in arena gigs unless I score really good seats

However, from mid court or closer, even in the 200s, the sound can be quite good, and you can get an excellent recording with some nice cardioids or hypercards.  certainly not as ideal as being DFC, but those seats are hard to come by for most acts these days.  the garden can be sweet sounding when the right guy is behind the board.  unless you are very close to the PA, side stage for example with a side array, you should avoid using the 4061s.
