For users of A/T 853rx mics gear question/stealthing
« on: September 18, 2007, 09:58:06 PM »
Sorry if this question if off topic for this particular forum.I run a pair of A/T 853rx mics powered by Denecke PS-2
phantom power supply.I stealth the mics in a mesh ball cap but get real tired of wearing a ball cap on backwards
for various reasons. One venue wouldn't let me in with the ball cap whatsoever.
I'm wondering any other locations anyone else has worn these mics and how did you attach them to your
shirt or clothing or whatever.I've not had any luck using tape to secure mini alligator clips to the mics,as the
tape falls apart when I am recording. Thanks for the help.

My u853s have removable clips. Actually there are a couple different types. Call soundpros and see if they will work with yours. As far as wearing them...with the clips there is a nice place to wear them....just think about it for a few....think of how they would be on a stand, then apply that to how you could closely simulate it. Its pretty simple really.

Put button holes under shirt collar. Feed mic up from underneath. Put velcro around mic body and a stick on velcro under shirt collar.

I'll take any "t-shirt" and cut a small hole in the back of the sewn collar, right above where the tag is.  I feed each mic into the hole & run them on either side of my neck & use a small paperclip to hold the mic in place.   It's nice because when you run in a hat, you sometimes get phasing from trying to look down & check levels, and, you can move your head around.   Only downside is you're losing about 10" of height on your mics or if you are adament about X-Y,ORTF, etc...

I have used a small wire head band that my daughter would use to keep her hair back.  Clip the clip to the band, place on head and away you go.  Place the my on the side of you head, you head will act like a jdisc.  It works great.  Or slide the mics down as close as you can to your ears and you have a binural recoding.   Peace have fun.  OOK

I use almost the same approach. need slightly shaggy hair for it but it works well.  Buy a pair of the wraparound style headphones for real cheap, then pull off the actual earphone piece and attach the mic in that place. You can then trim the extra plastic bits off if you feel like it's too obvious.

Here's a couple of photos from my old rig (almost the same as yours) to give you an idea.  I left the extra plastic in place because I sometimes wore a hat (like in the photo) and this kept the fabric from rubbing against the mic body.
