Topic: Mic stand recommendation?

hi guys - a couple of years ago, i bought an American DJ LTS-5 light stand to use as a mic stand.  it is 9', and came (at that time) with a 5/8" threaded adpater, which i was able to just screw my mic boom onto, and off i went.  well, i went back to the same place to buy another one just like it a few days ago - they still sell the same stand, but now it does not come with a 5/8" threaded stud - it comes with some stud made to attach lights, and they dont sell an adapter that would allow me to use it as a mic stand.

so, i need another recommendation for a good 7-9' light stand that can be used as a mic stand.  i know some of you have bought stands off ebay, but i cant tell from their ads whether they have 5/8" threads at top.  what say?  thanks.

You might still be able to use the LTS-5, if it has a 5/8" stud that I see on most light stands.  Looks like the attached pic.  Note I'm using a clamp in that pic, not the adapter noted below.  Also note the pic's stud has a 3/8" male thread on top, but I also have a 5/8" stud with a 1/4" tip, and yet another 5/8" stud with no thread on top).

If your stand has a 5/8" stud (no threads) tip (some of which also include a 1/4"-20 thread on the end), consider a Bogen 5/8" stud | 3/8" male thread Rapidapter and a 3/8" > 5/8" thread adapter.  The Rapidapter makes for easy/swift on/off.

The above is what I use, and it works quite well.

If the stand doesn't have a 5/8" stud, well...not sure what to say without knowing precisely what tip.  But I suspect you can use that stand if you like, we just need to find out the tip type to identify the appropriate adapter.

To directly answer your question, if I needed a 9' stand, I'd consider the Bogen 3333.  I mostly use a Bogen 3373, which hits max height of ~7'2" with legs tucked in as tight as possible in a very narrow footprint (I assume the spec'd max height of 6'1" assumes a minimum footprint width for greater stability, beyond which I go when using mine).  Not the most stable in this config, but for my purposes it works quite well.

I like the A.E.A. one that Sonic Sense sells.  Only one I have used so far that is still in one piece.  It may go a bit high for your needs, but I love it.

I've seen a very stoutly built vocal-type stand made by Hercules.
A guy that I record with has a pair of them, and they're really solidly built stands.
Its a boom type stand, and threaded for standard 5/8-27
