Flash Recorders - Mic in: What would you get?
« on: November 21, 2007, 07:31:10 PM »
OK, so, having surfed a few different threads, I feel the need to post for feedback. I currently use an AD1K and run it into a laptop; while I like the sound of that setup with my MBHO mics, it's bulky, and the battery issue is a pain, especially on the laptop, although the 12V sealed lead acid batteries for the AD1K aren't much better (such a backbreaker!)

I'm thinking of selling my beloved AD1K, since my current EcoCharge batteries are dead and I would need new ways to power them, and going with an all in one solution. While I like the SD722, I can't afford it. I also can't get the modded HP2 or 671 from Cascade or . Basically, with my finances the way they are, I'd be buying it from Guitar Center (I have a GC card), and they are having a 20% off sale Friday morning.

I need a good sounding unit that will supply 48v. I'm thinking of the HP2 or 671, but will accept other suggestions. Unmodded, what would you say would be a good choice that would get me close to the AD1K in sound? I'm also open to offers for the AD1K right now, but will probably post it for sale in YS later, if I decide to get a flash recorder.

OK, tell me!

Microtrack II just might fit your need for also having 48 powering ability, but hard to tell for sure as this newest version has yet to ship and be tested to live up to advertised specifications.  You'll need some kind of external powering accessory to run this deck for more than a few hours, but at $299 MAP, its low cost should afford having enough budget to buy an adequate external power solution.

The $600 Fostex FR-2LE has mic pre's that sound very clean.
With a 7.2V rechargeable battery (like used in RC cars) mounted
internally, there is plenty of power to run the recorder for
hours while providing 48V phantom power.

There is considerable discussion about the FR-2LE here

Flintstone

my recommendation as well. and once you save up $175, get Busman Audio to modify it either with Vintage mod(warm) or transparent mod(clean). I think the Vintage Mod would better suit the MBHO's personally.........

I also run MBHO mics(ka200/ka500/actives/603 A bodies) and I plan on getting a Vintage(Warm) Mod from Busman hopefully early into the next year(2008). I HIGHLY recommend those units....

Hey Candace,

Ditto on what Flintstone and Bean said.  I think the FR2le will fit your needs nicely, and as Bean said, you can have Busman upgrade it down the line.  In the Ebay sales section, there's a thread that links to an ebay seller selling these for $400 which might be worth it over the GC price.

Have a good T-day, hope to see you out soon!

I also agree with the other guys. I picked up and FR2-LE on ebay for $400. I sent it off to Busman to get modded. For $600, you will have a very nice, compact, and light all in one unit. And the fact that it fits and RC car battery inside the unit is icing on the cake, less wires running through your bag and less possibility that it may get pulled out during a show.

I ran the unit once before sending it to get modded. It is very easy to use. Once you have your settings set up, the recorder remembers them and loads them every time you power up the unit again. So at the show, its a matter of powering up and hitting record.
