« on: December 10, 2007, 03:24:50 PM »
Hello,

Here is a sample of my record made 2 weeks ago in London.
I'm trying to find optimal setiings of my record to make it sound good.
(Edirol R-09 (Low cut on, AGC off, Mic stereo)+SP-SPSB-1(no bass roll off option) +MM-HLSC-3)

http://www.sendspace.com/file/j5ciy5

Can someone plese advise me what i can do with it?
I use SF, Audacity.

Thanks

Without auditioning the file, might be useful to know the R-09 LOW CUT -operates (-3dB point) at a very high 185 cycles.  This will effectively reduce all the bass.  Often recordings of acoustic venues have a very 'thin' sound that now needs bass boost editing.

Best way to correct for this is with opposite of the original 1 pole 185Hz High Pass Low Cut with post filter process.  Usually easier using custom adjusted FFT Low Pass filter as option found in some editors like Audition.

Or simply use 'less nice sounding' graphic equalizer found in all editors to boost the bass below 185 cycles to taste.

Well you're only going to be able to polish this so much, and it's difficult to reproduce the low-end lost with doing the high pass on the R-09.  I'll try a few processes on this when I get home and post my results... but there's no way you can get back the low-end this recording desperately needs.

It is a lesson learned.  You can take out what you do not want in post.  It is the devil's own job to put it in.   8)

This is about a 5 minute job... it will probably sound bloated in the low end but getting a defined, impacting kick in an arena show is very difficult, plus it was already rolled off a good deal, yada yada.  Just thought I would entertain you.

Bit of a late reply, but I used to use a JB3 with SP battery box and SP mics.
Then I got an Edirol R09, and when I first used it I carried on using the SP battery box (with bass roll-off to 0)
I found that I lost almost all of the bass from the recording (bass cut off) The SP mics were the same as before.

I stopped using the battery box and used the mics direct, with plug-in-power and it improved the sound no end - much more low end than before.

No help at all with this recording, but it might help a bit in the future.
Best of luck  :)

^^^^  I would write SP and ask why the sound got "better" without the BB.  Can you elaborate on "improved the sound no end"?  Does the BB also function as an amp?  To figure this out we would all need a lot more specific info.

Cheers
