The golf club umbrella is DEF the way to go if you can find one.  It's bigger than the 6 inches you're looking for...i'd guess about 15 inches or so.  People used to use their regular size umbrellas to shelter their clubs when they were sitting in the back of the golf cart and it started raining.   The problem is that the regular umbrella is way too big.  This guy fits the top opening of the golf bag perfectly.
