joe bonamassa gig taping advice - Dilema...
« on: February 15, 2008, 12:20:11 PM »
im seeing joe bonamassa on saturday. im aware that he allows taping but im not sure if the venue does. do i risk calling the venue to find out?. if i do and they say no then security may be more aware that people may tape the show. its not a big venue to be fair so i dont think security will even be that tight.

all the same, i would be nice to open tape.

any advice would be appreciated

thanks

Alex

Call and ask if they allow taping. You don't even need to mention your show because if they do allow it and Bonamassa does as you already know, you're set. Bring a print out of his taping policy if it's available also.

I've open taped Bonamassa a bunch of times. Print out the taping policy and if anyone questions, Joe has his own FOH sound engineer and any of the crew/band will vouch for you.  Shouldn't be too much of an issue.  At the last show I taped with my open rig, I stayed out of the sound engineer's sight-line and set up in the fenced in area by the sound/light desks, so my stand was protected.  Worked like a charm and I got an excellent pull from the SP C4's.

I have taped Joe a couple times in the last couple years and he was totally cool with Taping.  Actually a pretty cool cat in general. I would just show up and ask nice.  If the house sec give ya hard time just ask for Joe's Road MGR and he will more than likely get everything smoothed out.

Here is a funny little clip and some pic's from a show a couple years back.

What I would do is email the venue, tell them you have permission to audio/video tape Joe and want to let them know so you won't get hassled by security.

While Joe is taper friendly, and has his taping policy on his website (and easy to find) that policy does not over-ride venue policy. If the venue doesn't allow taping, Joe or his crew most likely will not intercede on your behalf; however, the promoter might.

I taped him at a casino with signs for no video/audio and I didn't get denied.  I have set up FOB and the locals just think I am part of Joe's crew or the local sound crew.

Let us know how it goes for you.

thanks for the advice guys. i will be calling the venue today and will see what they say...more to come

Hi

i wanted to know whether the cheese and grain's policy
allows members of the audience to record concerts?. i
ask as i am aware that some bands allow fans to openly tape their gigs
as a venue, would you stop this?

i would appreciate your feedback

Alex

RESPONSE:

Alex,
Sadly, it is not a question of our policy. Any recording of an act in
the hall would contravene copyright protection with the Performing
 Right
Society, whether the performer approves or not.
Thanks for asking, and sorry not to have a more positive response.
Best wishes,

what's the Performing Right Society?

From what I saw from a Google, they once sued a Scottish taxi service for playing the radio in their cars where it could be overheard by their customers and not paying royalties.  What a lot of hogwash.

Of course, I doubt Joe Bonamassa and his band are part of the PRS, so I don't see why it applies to their performance.  Typical venue BS.

Bring your open rig and walk in like you own the place. If denied, keep "stealth" on your person as a backup.

Man, I'd be pissed if I got denied at Bonamassa.  He's soooooo good.

I realize this is a UK issue with the club and the UK being all low profile, in the States it's union run houses.
but I wanted to point out...
I find when you first make contact with a club to inquire about taping a friendly artist if you use short leading phrases like " I'll be recording for the band's free web distribution " and "remain unobtrusive to the staff"
rather than "would you stop this" you have more success.
If you ask someone if they are going to stop you.. they will.

i taped the gig without any problems - on the security side of things. show spread over 2 minidiscs, one of which clocks in at around 75 mins and the other 35 mins. the last 10-15 seconds are missing from the last track on MD1 due to the change. when i made the change it started recording for about 5-7 seconds and then the lead came out. luckily i realised and i only missed out on about 1:45 mins (crowd noise and joe chatting). MD2 cuts in at the beginning of the encores.

i think the recording came out ok - i will listen to the mds over the next few days to see. i set the pre-amp to about 12 o'clock and for the encores i turned it up to about 2 o'clock. i was standing about 6 metres FOB.

joe was as good as ever, playing to an excited crowd of about 500-600. very enjoyable show.

will keep you posted with how things panned out on the recording. samples to be posted when i do the transfer

Alex
