Topic: Multiple software questions

So I have a friend in the business.  He gave me a shitload of software.  I am now sitting on Adobe Audition & Pro, Samplitude and Pro Tools, besides already having Soundforge 6.0 & 9.0, Audicity, and usual suspects of CDWave, EAC, TLH.  I'm wondering what would be best for 1.) mixing matrix in post. 2.) Remastering stereo sources? 3.) Converting cassettes.  I haven't really played around with these programs yet but was wondering what the TSKB has for input.  Before this I was using Audicity for files over 2GB and Soundforge for a lot of other editing(as long as it was under 2 GB).  The Adobe Audition looks pretty slick, the Samplitude manual reads pretty well and looks like a powerful program and I haven't even looked at pro tools yet.  I would need an M-Audio for the pro tools right? Or, can I import files into it from cd?  Thanks in advance, Kirk

FWIW, SoundForge 9.0d now supports files up to 4GB.    They also have 4 channel support now as well.

They're actually up to version 9.0e now.

Audition, Samplitude, and Audacity will all provide sufficient functionality in the three scenarios about which you ask, though Audacity's the weak link (but on the other hand, it's free).  I'm sure ProTools and SoundForge fall in line with Audition and Samplitude in applicability to your scenarios.  After using Audition, WaveLab, Audacity, and Samplitude, I've finally settled on Samplitude since I like it's interface and object-oriented workflow best.  The only one to decide, I think:  try 'em all, see which one you like.

Thanks for the feed back guys.  My version of SF is 9.0d, I'll have to check and see if it supports 4GB files too.  It seems as if the SF versions are pretty much the same look and feel so I suspect there is no major difference in their use.  I am going to try out the Audition and Samplitude, those seem to be the ones which appealed to me on first inspection.  Like ya said try 'em all and see.  Maybe some day I'll even try to sync some audio to video but for now that is far out of reach.
